Mac OS X Requirements

I'm still running Panther (10.3.9) It looks like the iPod Touch needs Mac OS X v10.4.10 or better. I decided I am going to get the Touch when its available, but I wasn't planning on updating my OS until Leopard came out.

I don't mind waiting a few extra weeks to get the new iPod, but does anybody else think it's crazy that all the new iPods wont work with Panther... That's almost like Microsoft making the Zune player only work with Vista

Well, with the iPhone and iPod touch, it may be more about synchronization of calendar and contact information than it is about anything else.

The Sync Services in OS X are dramatically different between Panther and Tiger, so it's entirely possible that the core feature that my not work properly is synchronization of Calendars, Contacts, and Bookmarks.

Apple doesn't normally get into obfuscation about which features will or won't work. If a device or software isn't fully supported by an older version of the OS, then it's not supported at all under that OS.

That makes sence I guess, so are you saying that music can be synchronized? just not some of the other stuff, therefor the device is not 100% compatible, so they are forced to say you need 10.4.10 or better... meanwhile I can put music on the iPod with a 10.3.9 system?

Well, I make no guarantees, as I haven't tried it, but that sounds like the most logical explanation for the differences in requirements.

Update: The iPod Touch does not work with 10.3.9 (Panther) The iPod will not even work out of the box unless you connect it to iTunes. I'm waiting for Leopard to upgrade my mac, but in the mean time, I have to use windows machines to manage my new iPod (great)

I may be mistaken (and probably am), but since the iPod Touch doesn't show up on the desktop when you connect it, I'm guessing the connection services are different somehow. Maybe a limitation in 10.3.9 prohibits it? Not sure.

As for the comparison with Vista, I don't think that's fair. Tiger has been out for 2.5 years -- not 6 months... And unless your computer is over 5 years old, you can upgrade to Tiger (unlike Vista which would slow you to a crawl).

I can vouch for this. I purchased my Touch without looking at the system requirements, just assuming it would work. My Touch would then only how up as a camera. Once I figured out that it requires OS X 10.4.10, I purchased and installed it. Now my Touch is working flawlessly.

This is major extortion. For me, having purchased an eMAC just over two years ago, is ridiculous that it should be obsolete. I guess because I am from a time when we still used typewriters, which never went obsolete. Basically this justifies a lot of jobs at Apple. Well, I took my brand new ipod nano, my first ipod, and I returned it. And I can still rock out to CD's and (shriek) my tape cassettes. Fact is, the WHO still rocks whether it's an ipod or a scratchy vinyl LP. Someday I will get a new computer, maybe then I will get a fancy iPOD. But no chance I go out and purchase a new OS just to play some toy. Apple just lost a customer.

It doesn't make sense for a company to provide backward support for every product they release for an extended period of time. This is the computer industry where things move fast. The thing that I think you're missing is that you can for a fairly inexpensive amount upgrade your operating system which adds new features and functionality. They haven't made your eMac obsolete - far from it - but yes the OS is getting long in the tooth.

As for your CD and cassette tapes - you're right. They work just fine. Enjoy them. That your prerogative.

I, on the other hand, have every song from my 250+ CDs plus a couple movies tucked in my pocket to listen to/view whenever I feel like it. And that's my choice.

welcome to the lounge

i'm not sure if it's too late or not, but maybe you could use an app like

SyncTunes to sync between iTunes and your new iPod
