I can get internet just about anywhere I want in the city. Plus I am a college student so I will be using my touch there since we have free internet.
yea...at my college we have wifi....and at my job, the store located right next to me has wifi....then the mcdonalds next to me has it, even the coffee shop next to me has it.
ok, is it just me or do most places make you pay for wifi though?
Maybe someone can answer this for me. So do you need to be in a "hot spot" area in order to view the internet on the iTouch?
wifi is Not as available as some people think. Its getting harder and harder to find free, open, wi-fi and that's pretty much a fact. I've had the iPhone for a while now and everywhere I look, the wi-fi networks are locked down.
On a side note, edge really isn't that bad! If you want free wifi camp out at borders, outside some cell phone stores, mom&pop cafes, and some big retailers. Those will most likely be open access.
public libraries are also usually a good spot for free wifi access, as well as apple stores (ie the real ones!!)
Try a site like http://www.wififreespot.com/ to see how your area stacks up (if it's included).
I seldom take my laptop anywhere, but when I do, I can generally find a Borders with WiFi or the hotel I stay at will have it. Plus I have it in my house and at my job. If you live in a more rural area, you might have trouble. And if you find that you want to connect, and are surrounded by pay WiFi hotspots, you may want to examine whether the costs of those spots are less than what you'd pay for a data plan on an iPhone, but even then, WiFi is much faster, from what I understand.
So whether or not WiFi is common enough to make the iTouch worthwhile will very likely depend on your location. Also consider that as more and more people have WiFi devices, we may see more places offering free WiFi in order to draw people in.
And of course the iPod has features that don't require any internet connectivity, but really, as a straight up iPod, it's a little short on space (for me anyway). It's the internet features that make it appealing, and if I were in an area that didn't have much in the way of Hotspots, I probably wouldn't even consider the iTouch, but would go straight for the iClassic.
Portland Oregon (where I live) offers free wireless city wide. It's 1 mbps. They let you crank it up to 2 mbps for a small monthly fee. The coverage is still a little spotty but they intend to blanket the entire metro area by the end of next year.
Ok here is my situation,
I have 2 iopds already, a nano 2nd G (love it) I listen to books and use it while i walk and I like my small cell phone for the same reeason. Perfect for what I use them for. I have An old shuffle with music on it and a waterproof case andaterproof headphones I use for swimming (got it free)
I am a taxi mom who would love to check e mail away from home without sclepping my laptop and watch tv/video while I wait endless hours for the kids to do their endless afterschool activities.
I guess I am not really looking at this to replace my iopd, but to become a PDA or portable computer portable video....any thoughts?
I think people who are looking primarily for an internet device should really be looking at an iPhone, unless you work somewhere which has free wi-fi.
If they released a 16GB iPhone I would definitely think about buying that when it comes to the UK after my current contract has run out.

Am I living in the dark ages or am I mistaken in thinking that wi-fi isn't available everywhere. I can't for example, walk through the mall and use the iTouch to check my email, can I?
When I travel with my laptop there are precious few places I can get internet connectivity and most require that I pay for it (the skylounge, the acela train lounge, hotels) but maybe I'm completely confused.
