use iPhone headset with laptop?

Has anyone seen a splitter that would allow one to use the iPhone earbuds (or any similar earphones with a built-in microphone) with a laptop with standard 1/8" plugs?

I've heard that the iPhone plug is very similar to what is called a "military plug," used in aviation, so I guess a military socked -> two 1/8" plugs is about what I need. Kind of difficult to do a Googl e search for something like that, though.

(and no, I don't want to go Bluetooth)

I see less people wearing these "Klingon Jewery" than b4r. Perhaps the novelty is wearing off.

you can use iPhone headphones with any regular headphones jack. For instance I use my iPhone headphones with mackbook and they work just fine

Sorry that I wasn't clear -- I want to use the microphone too. Like for Skype or voice iChat.

I will try using my iphone headphones with my macbook tomorrow and will let you know.

... the plug appears to be a U-174/U... Radio Shack doesn't carry the socket, though

Oh, you were clear enough. Just some people don't bother to read, or they are just too dumb to figure out what you are saying.

As for the iPhone headset, that is a good question. I'm sure fabricating a splitter wouldn't be too difficult. I on the other hand, would be interested in using my military flight headset with my iPhone. I wonder if there is some sort of reducer for the plug, or I might just have to take an iPhone compatible headset and splice it to the flight headset.

Cowboy_X

If you have a flight headset, would you mind comparing and letting me know if the plug and contacts appear to be the same?

This is going to sound crude but I have heard of people whittling the plastic around the plug to fit, that might work for you.

Found the connector to build my own adapter...had a lot of investigating only to find your thread which lead me to a few more searches...and got me to.
