Don't neccessarily discount the iPod. With it, you could:
1) Keep the files encoded at higher bit rates (MUCH better quality)
2) Use it as a digital wallet for a Digital Camera
3) Use it as a firewire/usb2.0 hard drive
4) store address book and calendar stuff
5) get audible.com content ("book on tape")
You may want to check out the Rio Nitrus. It is quite a bit smaller than an iPod and uses a very tiny harddrive that holds 1.5GB of data. They list this at 375 MP3 songs or 750 WMA songs. The battery life is listed at 16 hours.
Shadow, that Nitrus looks superb... Personally, if I were starting out now, I'd be waiting for the mini-iPods - but if I couldn't wait that long, I'd probably get the Nitrus.

I would like to get my dad an mp3 player for Christmas. I don't want to give him an iPod because he won't get near 2,000 songs. I was wondering if anyone knew of anyone decent mp3 players that held around 500 songs?
Any help is appreciated.
Edit :: sorry if this is in the wrong forum - it was the only one without "ipod" in the title.
