Format??? Never needed to format mine. Using a 3rd Gen iPod for over six months with never having to format it.

Reinstall the firmware , it clears the whole iPod.

Never needed to format my iPod on my Mac. Been using a 30 GB iPod since the model was first introduced. Use my iPod every day for 8 to 10 hours or more a day. So far, never needed to format or reformat it.
