Generally cell phone deals require initiation of a NEW two year contract, not a contract extension. If you extend your contract, you're still on the original contract, and thus, are simply replacing your phone, which carriers don't subsidize.
Part of the reason he might have been told no is that, unless his profile is incorrect, he is 14 years old, and therefore can't do anything to a contract, whether it's possible or not.
AT&T Wireless used to let you do this depending on how close to your contract end date you were but Cingular apparently does not allow this.
The SLVR is a great phone, but the list price Cingular had for it here in WA was $199. I recently paid $199 with a $100 mail in for 2 year contract.

I am not up for a new service plan until next year and i want to buy a SLVR. I was in my Cingular store the other day and saw that the SLVR with a 2 year plan is $199 and saw that without plan its $299. I really dont want to spend $300 on a phone. So, the manager comes up to me and asks if i need any help. I ask him if i add 2 years to my plan can i get the SLVR for $199? Hes says no. I was a little shocked because i know i have done this in the past. So, is it possible to do this and was the manager messing with me? If not, where can i buy a cheap SLVR without a plan?
