Marriage of a MF & IS (actually,a knockoff--BSE) from a slightly paranoid user(pics!)
WHY?
My reasons are simple. I wanted to protect my brand new 5g 30g ipod from the scratches that I heard were nightmaring millions of ipod'ers globally. WHAT? I used a Martin Fields overlay on the FRONT of my ipod, and then an Invisible Shield knockoff (BestSkinEver) on the BACK of my ipod. WHY??? Why the 2 different covers? I was 100% going to buy an IS, but then I realized with the H20 application came great risk... water in my ipod! I KNOW it is highly unlikely, but with my "luck," I'd definitely botch it up somehow. SO, I decided to do what a few users have done and apply an IS to the back, and a MF to the front. (w/ the Martin Fields, no water is needed. (it's also what they say-- CRYSTAL clear!)) I used a best skin ever because it's supposed to be just as good as the original. I don't know about that, but I DO know it's a LOT cheaper! WHERE? In my bathroom, with some steam (and strange looks from my wife) HOW? (1of2) The INSTALLATION of the MF and BSE were quite simple, actually! I kept Apple's clear sticker cover on the ipod to protect it for the time being. By removing the sticker on the front at the last minute, it kept the DUST OFF of my ipod until I was ready to apply the MF. I read a LOT of forums and decided the best way to go was to not touch the overlay at all. (especially on the back's adhesive). I used scotch tape to make handles for the MF and I eased the overlay on. I also put a piece of tape right against the bottom (dock side) of the ipod so the MF could have a back to "lean" against. That worked great, and I was able to line it up almost perfect. I found a coupla dusties get in, and I lifted up the MF and used tape to get them out. Squeegee-ing bubbles out is pretty easy, too, and I was able to live w/ the 1 dust particle bubble I had left. (it would not die) Meanwhile, I put on the back some PDA screen coverings to protect the back until the next step. HOW? (2of2) Like with the IS/BSE, I also tried to steam up the bathroom to get less dust (that works, i think) and I removed the PDA covers at the last minute. This removed ALL of the dust previosly on the ipod and I was able to put the back of the BSE on to my ipod. I put my ipod on a towel to absorb extra moisture. Now, WHAT ABOUT WATER getting into my ipod? USEFUL TIP! Cover up the open ports and switches w/ scotch tape! Prevents water for gettin' in. I even used tape to cover up the click wheel. Use tweezers to remove the BSE skin from it's backing. That's the hardest part, IMHO. I squeegee-ed out the extra water after lining up the BSE, and bam! I'm done! WHEN? It took basically an hour divided between the 2 tasks. Not bad for total protection! Besides, I plan on using a clear case and my marware sportsuit in addition to the skins. (no overlay can protect from clumbsy hands) I have also read about ipods being scratched by a protective case! Nasty, huH? Needless to say, I thought a lot about what to do-- probably TOO much, but in the end, I have a ipod that I'm free to abuse. I hope you guys found this helpful/neurotic/geektastic/annoying. Let me know if you have any questions! ~funkpod www.soul-kitchen.org for funk! |

Nice work. Thanks for the tips and congratulations on a job well done. Do you anticipate problems fitting the ipod into the Vaja with the skins on?

no problems at all! The 2 films REALLY are stuck to the case. I didn't think the MF would adhere so well, but it does! And honestly, they add SOOO little thickness it wouldn't show any difficulties unless you're talkin' a hard case.
Thanks for the congrats. ~funkpod |

Looks great, but you may need to worry a bit about putting your ipod into a Vaja. I have mine and I absolutely cannot remove it from the case (with IS applied). Others are having the same problem, also.

funkpod- how is the belt clip with the marware case. I had read that previous versions dented the iPod over time. Also how does the scrollwheel work through the case. Thanks!

i DO know that i left the belt clip on for a little bit of time and what happens is that the lower part of the clip leaves a little impression on the CASE, but not on the ipod. the case has this sort of short-term memory, where it'll wrinkle a little bit if left folded up, and then it'll disappear. (much like my memery sometimes) I don't see it denting my ipod, honestly, BUT i plan on usin' a little piece of paper to prevent the clip from that "impression" thing i talked about in the previous paragraph. i'm goin' joggin' tomorrow w/ my ipod, i'll let you know more specifically how the belt clip functions. ~funkpod |

i definitely see a difference. the MF is clearer than the BSE. HOWEVER, i would only know the difference if i saw them next to one another. when i look at the back of my ipod, i think "clear." when i look at the front of my ipod, i REALLY see the term clear. it's really personal preference. i was almost going to do the invisible shield all the way until i found out water might get into my ipod. that's why i did the MF front. either solution is fine, the bottom line is that you'll have a protected ipod. ~funkpod |
