Angry ipod update "required file cannot be found"

I cannot put photos on my ipod.
Every time I try to put photos on it I get a message that says

"The ipod "XXX's ipod cannot be updated because the required file could not be found"

I called tech support and they were clueless.

Has anyone else had this happen to them? How did you fix it?

Tech support said it could be something else on my computer that is causing it but they had no idea what.

Try a hard restore. Its will erase all of you music and any data on the ipod so make sure you have everything backed up some where. This will return your ipod to factory settings with no files missing.

YES finally someone thats had the same problem as me

all music updates fine when i plug it in, but i cant get any photos to update, All forums i found on google have constant users asking for help but no answers!

When i plug in the ipod music starts updating fine, then a pop up comes up saying "The Ipod 'MC iPod(name)' cannot Be Updated. The Required File Cannot Be Found."

I havent moved pictures around and itunes seems to be finding the pictures folder no probs. i have around 10gig free so space shouldnt be an issue.

Im using Windows XP (SP2), iTunes 6.0.3.5 (latest atm) and the latest firmware update for the iPod photo 1.2.1

I've tried reinstalling itunes and also restoring ipod to factory settings and then updating which did nothing, the same error message came up

now i have no photos on my ipod

The same thing just happened to me...
I'm sorry I'm Comp. illiterate... What do you mean by sync?
Is it possible that you can explain this a little more?

Same thing just happened with me...
Everything was working well, until I plugged my iPod today and got the dreadful message.
How come no one knows how to solve it?
PS: If that can help, I am syncing all my music and pics from an external HD.

For testing purposes I tried a different approach...
Initially I was syncing using Adobe Elements (which works great for me since I can create catalogs without having to actually move the files), so I went to the Photo tab in iTunes, and changed to sync from My Pictures, and things worked out well.
So I guess that could be a workaround for some of the users who would not mind storing their pics in organized folders under My Picgtures.
The thing still bugging me is "what triggered that?" since it was working smooth, and I don't recall changing anything in my setup recently.

Really!

yeah same mine works now, i used to sync from 'my documents' folder, and get every photo in there, but now just sync from 'my pictures'

its like the ipod got sick of 'my docs' lol

u reckon it might be something to do with the ipod photo cache folder?

I found that it was the syncing with the photos.
go into preferences and un-sync it and it should update fine.
mine did.

Experiencing diffficulties as well

I have recently purchased a 30g ipod video and would like to be able to put photos onto it . When I synch to a folder the ipod will go through the entire process of converting the photos and creating a cache folder on my computer but will always return the error message " ....Folder could not be found . " I have tried syching to a number of different folders at different locations including one on my desktop . Needless to say I am running xp on a pc and not a mac . Could my ipod be missing a folder or is this an xp problem ? When I enable disk use I find that nothing happens when i try to add photos . Also the folders in the cache folder on my computer are empty .

Solution - "required file cannot be found" when updating iPod photos

This problem started happening about a month ago (around the same time as a software update maybe?) and I was very frustrated. Seems silly I never thought to do this, but after many hours of searching the web for a solution, and several failed attempts to correct it, I found a solution that worked for me.

1) Change your iPod preferences to say that you DON'T want to import any photos to your iPod.
2) Update your iPod and the pictures will be deleted from the iPod
3) Change your preferences back to the way you want them (i.e. import entire library or selected albums, etc.)
4) Update your iPod again, and all the pictures should now appear on the iPod

I know it's a bit tediouis, but it's better than having to dump all your music too with a full restore, and so far it's worked for me everytime.
