just back form the store, have my firewire installed...

I run windows 98 SE and a 10gig new iPod

I run through the beginnin gof the iPod installation CD and get this message:

Severe
The version of Operating System is Not Supported

I know for the old iPod, there was some type of download to get it to work with windows 98... what is that download and where can I get it?

basically if you don't have win ME and above the apple software won't work.

if you have the non-dock 10 gig the pod should already be formatted as a fat32 drive
thus the solution is to download ephpod and use it to sync to your pod

fortunately, the ipod software updaters still work in win98 so that's not too bad.

however, if you're referring to the dockable 10g then the pod should come preformatted out the box as a HFS+ disk, thus you'll need to either force-format the pod to fat32 (see my post here) or use macopener with ephpod to sync with it.

there's no way to sync with it using apple's supplied software as far as i know... the mmjb ipod plugin just doesn't work with the dockpod

even now, with ephpod, it's not possible to sync messages and the on-the-go playlist, so i guess it just too bad for us win98se users until joe masters gives us an updated version of his gem...

I open ephpod v2.58 (I have two icons, one is just ephpod and one is Ephpod Sync & Quit)

I'm assuming my computer is recognizing my iPod, somewhat, as I get an icon by the clock that has an arrow over it and is titled "Unplug or eject hardware"

so, I click the "next" key in EphPod and it says choose your iPod from this list and I get my a,c, and my two cd-rom drives

how do I get iPod to show up in this step so I can begin transferring things?

okay, if you've got the icon appearing, can you ensure that your ipod screen says "do not eject or unplug" when you have it plugged in? if so, the pod should show up as a removable drive.. usually the next available letter, i.e. if your cd drives are d: and e: the ipod will show up as removable drive f:

thus in ephpod you'll need to choose drive f:

if the pod doesn't show up as a drive, then there might be a problem.. try to get it to show up, because even without any additional software, the ipod can be used as a removable drive to move data around

I can't get it to show up. I"m only getting a charging screen rather than the unplug screen. I've tried plugging it into all three firewire slots I have, and turning off the computer, plugging in the iPod and restarting the computer

so, I guess something is wrong... what do I do now?

ouch, that's pretty tricky, you might want to confirm that the firewire ports are detected by the computer? under control panel - system manager- device manager, is there a 1394 Bus Controller entry? if not, you might want to see if you have all the drivers installed.

are your firewire slots on your mobo, or on an expansion card? I'm using the one on my Audigy, no problems here...

I just bought an "old" Windows 10g iPOD and have Win98 on my home computer, too. Bought the firewire card and was all ready to get portable because of echpod. This is when I discovered I am operating Windows 98...NOT Windows 98 SECOND EDITION (Win98SE), which is apparently what echpod needs to run properly. So I would suggest checking to make sure you're running Win98SE as a minimum. As for myslef, I am looking in to upgrading to Win2000. May as well get up to date.

This is my first post. Hopefully it's helpful.

I'm running 98SE, I really like 98Se and am not to thrilled with XP so I really don't want to upgrade unless I absolutely have to. I've noticed XP slows things down too much.

my firewire card runs through my motherboard, its installed properly as I have it on display in my device manager. and as I said before, I get the icon with the green arrow down by the clock to unplug it

am I defective, should I return it for another?

no problems man, i understand what it's like with a beautiful ipod in your hands and not being able to use it... sheer agony!

well if the card shows up in your device manager, and the icon with the green arrow appears, your ipod's screen should show a circle with a diagonal line (the "do not" sign) and say "do not disconnect". however, since it only shows that it is charging, it seems that your firewire ports are powered up but aren't doing any data transfers...

that's a little out of my league but hardware being what it is, you might want to try plugging your firewire card onto another pci slot if it's an expansion card. if it's on your motherboard then that's a little trickier. it would be ideal if you have another firewire device to test out the ports, but firewire stuff on the PC is really hard to come by

maybe you can also try going into the properties dialog of the firewire card in device manager and playing around with the options, could be worth a try

if all else fails, the pod could be defective, perhaps you might want to bring it back to the store and ask them to test it on their machines? if it works then i guess it's the pc...

yep.. Win98 SE is the oldest version of windows that's still supported, i'm afraid win98 and win95 are both obsolete...

think it's also the earliest version to support firewire and usb properly, plus adds a bunch of updates that make it more stable then win98 FE

yep heard that win2k is pretty stable but you might want to check the compatibility with your software, and ensure that you have all the win2k drivers for your hardware.

COnfession: two days ago, when I bought the iPod, the first time I plugged it in I got the "Do not remove" message... but I didn't know how to remove it... so I shut down the computer... wrong thing to do, right?

I guess I'll take it back to the store tomorrow and ask them to check it out

actually, that shouldn't affect the pod.. cause the do not eject message is just to prevent you from unplugging it while its hard disk is being accessed. when you shut down, the comp's not doing anything to it so it should be ok to remove it.

however, if you removed it before the comp shut down there's a small chance the hard disk may have been corrupted..

i guess the best way's to check if it works with the store's computer, or perhaps any other comp you have access to with firewire...

I'm a bit miffed at the people at the mac store, but then again... I was expecting a miracle...

I took the iPod in and they plugged it into their machines. They got the "Do Not Unplug" message. They told me to upgrade my operating system and if that didn't work, then I should call apple
