Fault: Nano Meltdown. Charging Problem - Overheating.

Please choose the appropriate forum for this topic. Thank you. Hi,

I have looked through the forums and haven’t been able to find anyone else with a similar issue.

My Nano is now dead after only 3 weeks of ownership! Here is what happened.

Yesterday I attached an iPod Mini AC charger to my Nano. After a short while (a couple of minutes) I noticed a burning smell. On investigation there was a big black spot that appeared to get rapidly bigger on the LCD screen. The back of the iPod became very hot as well. It was too hot to touch by the time I unplugged it.

After this incident my Nano no longer works. There isn’t an issue with the charger as it charges other iPod’s fine. So the flaw more than likely is with the Nano.

Anyone else experienced a similar issue?

If this is a common problem it would be worrying as it has the potential of causing serious harm.

Cheers,
W.

hi and welcome to the lounge.

anyways it seems like a very bad problem you may wanna go to the apple store and have them service it, this is something serious and none of us can take care of.

oh i forgot to say that the burning smell could've been the circuits being fried because of the power shortage.

Hi,

Well thanks for the welcome. Rather than finding a solution I am hoping to find out whether my issue is an isolated one or something more common.

I've submitted a service request to Apple and I will let you know what they come back with.

Cheers,
W.

Sounds isolated so far. Is the mini AC a usb connection or a firewire connection?

Relax! all is not lost!

You could just use the Nano as a coffee cup beverage warmer.

Well, I just received my replacement Nano. It would have been nice to know what caused the unit to fail. However do we expect Apple to admit there was actually an issue..... So all is fine in the end.

Given that no one else ever responded on a similar issue, I would unfortunately chalk it up to "#### Happens" Apple may not even know exactly what went wrong. You got a replacement, no one else is having the issue. So smile and enjoy your new nano!

That's interesting to hear. So it also happens with the USB charger.

Anyway, you shouldn't have to much of a problem getting a replacement.

From when I submitted a repair request online to when I received a replacement was about 2 weeks.

There's alot of buggering around as they send you out a return box....

okay.. i've had the nano also for under a month, and heres what happened with me..

put some songs and photos on the nano and then something happened.. itunes just crashed.. okay whatever i thought and disconnected . listened to some music and after putting it off Hold the usual thing happened , it crashed.. not a problem, did a restart but all what i got was an apple logo! not even backlight.. and the only key combination that worked was restart.. sleep didnt work... so i put it just away and next day in school i took it out of my pocket and when i took the sock off it was f..in hot! like reallyreally hot and .. a black spot on the LCD! .. so after school went to Apple care and showed them my nano and they were quite amazed at first.. asked me did i "just take it out of my pocket, and bam! its wrecked?" and so it was.. i haven't abused it in Any way... luckily got my replacement and they told me they'll send the nano to somewhere to check out what happened but luckily as i told, i now have a new one...

strange..
