Charging via laptop cardbus card firewire?

Just to start a thread that had been ongoing in the old forums ...

Is it possible to charge the new ipods (with docks) via a cardbus card firweire port?

The general consenus arising was NO. I went down to the Apple store in SoHo and this was the reply from the assistant there, too (though the knowledge base on forums like this generally tends to be broader/better, so if anyone knows of cardbus cards that can provide sufficient power to charge the ipod whilst connected then pls post).

Cardbus cards with firewire ports and a jack for external powering to AC outlets are available and seem about the best compromise, allowing data transfer and power, though obviously increasing bulk/cables with the necessity of an external power cable etc. Another alterntive that was discussued was the FireJuice by SIK: it appears (though no confirmation, as yet) to be possible to power the new ipods thro' these devices, but again additional cables/bulk are required (i.e. the FireJuice cables and unit).

So, concluding, does anyone know if it's possible to get self-powered cardbus cards with firewire ports?
Has anyone used the FireJuice and is it OK with the new generation ipods?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I am also looking for a pc-card adapter that will allow me to charge my iPod when connected to my laptop, eliminating the need to use the power pack charger. I have not found any information yet.

I don't think that is possible. Charge with the power adapter.

i bought a belkin firewire notebook adapter, it has a optional power plug, i just plug in a 12v adapter into it. i can now sync and charge at the same time

If you are looking to charge your ipod while connected to a laptop with a pcmcia card, it is possible. I bought a pcmcia firewire card with a voltage input. I bought a 1000mA 12 volt adapter and hooked it in.. Now my ipod charges and syncs at the same time.

kamj12, did you buy the adapter from Belkin. Seems like they would have one since they build in the plug ... but I can't find any mention of it on their site.

Just want to make sure I use the correct volt/amp adapter on my Belkin Firewire pcmcia card.

Tipster, I just went to Radio Shack and bought one for 14.95.
