I have the same problem with my 4g. The shuffle doesnt seem random enough. i heard the same some 3 times within 3 hours and i have 1500 songs on my ipod.

My 30 gig Photo has the same problem.
I think the problem does not lie in the make and model of the iPod. I think that the iPod playes songs that are played more often than others. I heard the same song 3 times when i shuffled it three times after 20 songs. I have 1002 songs. So basically shuffle mode sucks. That's why when you put new songs on it never plays them first (I think.) Cheers

None of you understand the concept of random?
If i randomly picked a marble out of a bag, ill get some marble. If i put the marble back, theres a chance of picking the same ol marble out of the bag. Think of the bag as the music library, the marbles as songs, and me as an ipod (my lifelong dream..to be an ipod..not). If you dont put the marble back in the bag...you get the ipod shuffle. So, the algorythm for randomization on the ipod isnt as good as the shuffles, but thats a drawback. Have fun extracting the algs. I've never had a problem with my mini's shuffling. Oh...and every ignorant person in this thread saying the shuffle mode sucks, take the time to find out how long it takes and how hard it is to make an algorythm as complex as the ipods. If you dont like it, make a better one. That is of course you go to college and take the courses to learn how. I doubt you did.

Let's look at it from a deck-of-cards standpoint. If I shuffle the deck of cards then begin picking cards from the top of the stack, that means I should not see the same card twice as long as there are cards in the stack.
Consider your music collection the "stack". If you put your iPod in shuffle mode, it should not repeat any of the songs in the stack until all have been played. But...so many things will affect whether or not this actually happens. The only way you're guaranteed not to hear a song twice while in shuffle is to "set it and forget it". Select the source for your music (playlist, artist, etc.), press play, and don't touch the iPod. Let it play until all songs in the list have played. Realistically, this will not happen often. Most users will choose a different song to hear, perhaps from a different list altogether. Between uses of the iPod, some users will allow their players to enter deep sleep mode. Some will update their iPods. ALL these events will result in hearing songs more than once prior to hearing them all for the first time. I doubt many people "set it and forget it". This is not the iPod's fault--it's performing as it should.

i agree with colbypaperboy. i just set my ipod mini to shuffle songs and forget about it. i even started this thing where i try to get it to play the whole way through with out touching it. i only recently noticed a flaw in this plan tho...i dont have a wall charger and my songs are about 45 hours all together so after 20 hours or so of listening i have to charge my ipod mini using the usb cable and start all over. man this is gonna take forever.

You might want to try this, it has a "smart shuffle" feature. While I don't think it will play all songs without repeating one, it's at least better than the stock shuffle mode. As a plus, you don't even need to use iTunes anymore.
