ipod mini just dies and won't wake up or charge or anything

i'm having a ridiculous problem with my mini - the thing works beautifully - then if i stop playing it - put it on pause - it just goes to sleep - never to wake up and i just have to wait.. there is no rhyme or reason to it... until it will start charging when I plug it in.. i have to try plugging it in about 20 times before it will start charging again... any ideas? :-(

Try resetting the iPod by holding down the menu and select buttons. If that doesn't work then try a hard reset by plugging the iPod into A/C power and reset. Also make sure you've updated to the latest firmware (1.2): http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/

what's the difference between a regular reset (not connected to a/c power) and a hard reset (with a/c power adapter attached)???

This happens to my mini a lot -- Blank screen, no buttons will turn it on. I've reset it both plugged in and not, and it's always turned back on just fine. Haven't noticed a difference one way or another.

In both instances my settings and music are all still saved, the only thing that resets is the clicker noise is back on 'speaker' when normally I turn it off.

Pretty annoying problem. I wonder if it's common to all minis. I use mine plugged in 80% of the time, perhaps that has something to do with it.

WOOT! I'm not alone! I was having the same, or very similar problem. Push the pause button and that was it, couldn't use the thing again 'till I got home to recharge it. Sent it back to Apple three times before they just sent me a new one. Glad I bought the extended warranty.

Regards,
Dave

Did getting a new one fix your problem?

They tried to fix it the first two times, then they replaced it on the third trip back. Although the tech I talked to on the phone the second time said that they were going to replace it they sent the same one back anyway and the problem persisted. Now I have a new one and so far no problems. I have stopped charging it with the dock and now use the A/C adapter exclusivly to charge it with. Don't know if that had anything to do with the problem originally or not.

Regards,
Dave

I just got a dispatch sent to me so I can return mine to Apple. Hopefully I'll be able to forgo multiple failed repair attempts. This problem has gotten out of hand on my mini. I would say that over half of the time my mini goes to sleep, the only way to get it to turn on again is a play+clickwheel reboot.

I'll post any further updates if anything interesting happens.

Could be.......... I never had songs skip 'till I went to 1.2 update...... I went back to 1.1 and everything is back to normal.

I am beginning to think that my problem is related to this thread:

http://www.ipodlounge.com/forums/sho...threadid=46420

I use the mini to listen to home-made audio books that I have made bookmarkable 80% of the time... It's possible that the crashes are related to this problem (previously reported in 4G ipods, but since the last mini update it has had the same faster/slower options for audiobooks that the 4G has...)

Hmmm... some testing is in order.

Update

My problem was definitely explained by the discussion I linked above. I followed the work arounds specified in there and I'm not getting lock ups anymore.
