Question How would YOU use a playqueue?

Howdy ho, iPodloungers,

Last night, me and my roomate went for a brief drive down to our friend's house. He drove. Of course, the first thing that I did after fastening my safety belt was to attach my iPod to the cord that dangles from the stereo's AUX port.

I asked my buddy what he wanted to hear. "Tool" says he. "Okay, what Tool do you want to hear?" He lists off a few songs -- Sober, Stinkfist, 46 & 2. Just enough rockin' to get us to our destination.

So, I surfed on over and started playing Sober. And then it hit me... again. "Dang, I wish this had queue-it-up" says I.

Now, instead of being able to queue up the songs he requested, place the iPod on the dash, and relax for a nice evening's drive to some good music, I have to "Tend to the iPod" -- wait patiently through each song, surf to the next song when the end of the currently playing song comes around, play the next song and start over agin.

Sigh. I love my iPod, aye. But dangit, I hate having to "tend" it. Sure, if I had asked him what he wanted to hear before we left the house, I could have built a playlist and synced it up. But come on. Give me a break. That's not how people live.

So, I can't be the only one out there who has found themselves wishing that this thing can queue music. What's your story?

Kurt, I couldn't agree with you more. When I go to the gym, there are days I just don't feel like listening to my normal playlist. I just wish I could que up the songs I'm in the mood for that day. It's frustrating to keep pulling my 'Pod out of my pocket, turn the hold off, and keep hitting the next button. Not only is this a pain, but it drains my battery too.

I want playques just as much as you do.

I would use a playqueue exactly as you've described because you're 100%, right on the mark. I don't want to make complex playlists with the interface of the iPod, but I would like to queue up a handful of songs on-the-fly.

The concept already feels partially baked-in you aren't locked into the "Now Playing" window when you're listening to music. You can go browse to other songs. To take it a half-step further...a global setting on the iPod to play new songs immediately or queue them up in some invisible, temporary playlist would be a very cool enhancement.

On a very related subject, here's some shameless self-promotion. Dennis just published my new article.

Playqueues would be a nice option, but I think I'm just too d##n lazy to use 'em. I'd probably queue up two or three and then give in and let it continue at random. Sorry guys!

Add another to the "agreed" list from me.

Funnily enough just before I read the article linked from the main page I was trying to decide what to listen and started queueing stuff in Winamp. It would be so easy for them to implement too! Hit the centre select button to queue a track or hit play to play it instantly.

But I think the first time we'll see it on our Pods is when iPod Linux matures enough to become a replacement firmware/OS. *sigh*

Mike

PS. /me grumbles at having to re-register for the forums..

Ahh, time will tell. 1.3 doesn't have a playqueue (or an "On The Go" playlist.... gawd, that's silly sounding).

Here's hoping that the newly-rumored iPod firmware 2.0 will make this new playqueue backwards compatible for all current iPod owners.

I know I'm just re-stating myself here, but I shudder to think that this fundamental feature may not end up being available in existing "early adopter" iPods. Us early adopters are what MADE the iPod what it is... here's hoping it all works out by this time next week.

Sticky this thread

Can this thread be sticky? We're discussing it (here and here in the news threads and a number of people have responded to the open letter I posted on my own site. It would be good to have a thread that won't fall off the page.

What surprises me most about the stuff Apple has left out of 1.3 is the fact that it irritates so many (not all, I know) of the current users, the people who've created and who populate sites like this one, the users who are responsible for so much of the great iPod buzz. Many of us bought our iPod after talking to another user. What happens when those users start saying "well, it's a terrific device, but don't count on much support from Apple?"

Smile I like the new forums...

The new forums are cool. Pity about the old data not being movable.

I think AMG is referring to the OTG palylist feature that is available with the new models (only).

i agree with kurt's suggestion. i would also like to throw maybe 3 albums that i want to listen to on the queue and put it on shuffle. and maybe in a bit i want to add another album to the list i can do that and it will update itself without having to restart the playlist.

I'm just wondering why Opiate and Aenema weren't included in the Tool playlist.

Ben

THIS DISCUSSION WAS DELETED BY APPLE TODAY EVENTHOUGH 2 MODERATORS TOLD ME IT WOULD STAY UP SINCE THEY WERE GETTING A SURGE OF RESPONSE.....I guess it was too much for them???

Well we almost did it guys...almost!

I am done trying, I sent them a letter today explaining my disgust with the way they handled it. How they allowed it then deleted it...grr. That just make them look bad... Oh well

Good luck to Kurt when/if he tries!
