Playing AACs on Windows?
Hey guys...
I'm a dual (more like quintuple) platform guy, but I primarly use my Mac when it comes to my iPod and my music. So, forgive me for asking what is probably a stupid question.... ...do any of the major players in the Windows world (WinAmp, MMJB, etc.) play AAC files? And if so, will they play them with .m4a and/or .m4p extensions? Thanks in advance, Jeff |

I'll give it to ya short and sweet, my friend.
Windows can play AAC's in either Winamp, Windows Media Player, or Foobar 2000 (yes, that's a real player). ![]() Winamp needs a plug-in (free), Windows Media Player needs a codec (free), and Foobar 2000 just needs GUI help...but it can play the files (free) without any additional software. I'll tell ya where to get the plug-in, codec, and foobar in a minute... First, what kind of AAC's can you play? Those extensions are there for a reason and they are very important. Files with a .AAC extension are typically MPEG-2 AAC content (audio only) in a non-protected form (but they can be protected) Files with a .M4A extension are MPEG-4 AAC content (audio only) and are in a non-protect form (but they can be protected) Files with a .M4P extensions are MPEG-4 AAC content (audio only) and are most likely protected by Apple's FairPlay technology. This is typically music downloaded from the Apple Music Store. These are not playable on Windows PC's...yet... Now for the easy to slightly less easy ways of playing your AAC content... Windows Media Player - Easiest, go grab the 3ivx codec from www.3ivx.com and install it. Your PC is now capable of playing .AAC and .M4A files. Enjoy. Winamp - Easy, go grab the Winamp AAC Plug-in from www.audiocoding.com and install. Vrooom! Foobar2000 - Still easy but weird, go grab this stand-alone app from www.audiocoding.com and experience what can only be described as a "unique" player. |

Gr8 in4mation m8! I've been looking to see if I can add the AAC codec to WMP. Now, does anyone know if iTunes can get a WMA codec. (so that I can play my friend's WMA music files in iTunes)?
cheers,
