I'd leave it plugged into the computer and charge it for an hour or more. Sounds like the battery is very low.
Then you can try to get it to be recognized properly. Apple has help.
This was when it was fully charged. I don't know what else to do.
Did you follow the link in my post? Apple has steps to help you there.

I just bought off of eBay a 2 GB iPod nano 2nd generation (silver) FW: 1.1.3
When I turn it on, it has a sad face, however I am able to get it into diagnostic mode and disk mode.
when I go into iTunes to restore it goes two bars and then pops-up,
"an unknown error has occured (1439) and the ipod could not be restored.
after closing itunes and then reconnecting the ipod, I decided to go into My Computer and see if I could format it or even explore it. when I click the ipod (not even labeled "IPOD", its labeled as "Removable Disk") it says that the device hasn't been formatted with windows and then prompts me if I wish to do so. it then says that the device cannot be formatted with windows.
Should I find a Mac user and have them test it?
Any other ideas?
Thanks everyone!
