Welcome to iLounge.
You can get it repaired if you want. It sounds like it's the hard drive. Depending on how much you will be charged, you might consider buying a new iPod instead.

I'm new to iLounge, and I can't figure out what's wrong with my ipod.
Not long ago, my ipod started having problems with its battery and playing music on it. It'd just die as soon as it got to half power and some of my music that used to play, wouldn't play or it'd take 1-3 minutes before it started playing. The next time I plugged it into my computer it notified me that I had to restore it to factory settings. After that, it worked fine for a bit, but probably a week later, after still having battery issues, it died and when I plugged it in to charge in my speakers, it made clicking noises for a while before actually starting to charge. When it turned back on, it had absolutely nothing on it. When I plugged it into my computer, it had me again restore it to factory settings. I did, and then after I unplugged it and plugged it back in, iTunes wouldn't read it. iTunes would instead, completely freeze and stay frozen even after I unplugged the ipod. I'd have to restart the computer in order to get iTunes to close. It's had the same reaction ever since with this ipod, but iTunes works fine with my 4G ipod nano.
Do I just need to replace my 5G ipod, or can it be fixed? Also, its 3 years old.
