IPhone crashes after sleep, also crashes on camera

Hi everyone,

I have the original iPhone and am experiencing a few problems.

I was running on the original firmware (I believe it was 1.0.2 or something like that). I was using this firmware for over a year without upgrading and experienced no problems.

Recently, I tried booting the camera, it waits a while and the lens does not open, and the iPhone crashes and reboots itself. Did a hard reset, etc, tried it again does the same thing. Oh well, I thought, I never use the camera anyway.

Then I notice that the iPhone not cannot go to "sleep", if I leave it off for a while it will crash, and will just show a black screen. You cannot boot it up simply by pressing the power button, you have to use a hard reset to bring it back to life. It only seems to do this if there are no processes running, for example, if I play music and click the power button on the iPhone it can stay on. Also, if it is charging it will not crash.

It seemed like a software problem, so I recently upgraded to the 2.0 firmware and still having the same problem (both the camera+sleep problem).

My hunch is that when I ran the camera software (my camera hardware could very well be faulty as I have dropped the phone a few times) and that somehow messed up the software, causing the sleep problem? I have looked around and it seems like a few people are having similar problems and wondering how you solved it.

Thanks!

Well, I have been doing some reading and a lot of people are complaining that the shutter sometimes takes as long as 6 seconds to load before the camera is usable. This has been reported with firmware 2.0

I'm not sure about your hard booting problem, but I do know that the first generation iphone was very susceptible to damage when dropped. I had some audio issues in the ear piece (low volume) after a few drops as well as poor GSM signal.

At this point I think it could either be a hardware issue, software issue, or both. If your still under warranty you might want to think about taking it in for the Apple geniuses to have a look.

You can also wait until the 2.0.1 bug fix and stability enhancement firmware comes out, which is rumored to be sometime in the next week. If this doesn't fix it I would definitely take it in at that point.

I wouldn't be surpised if it was a hardware issue. Whenever it tries to open the camera (either through camera software, or through the address book, it crashes). I'm just wondering if my two issues are related because they happened at the same time.

I did not purchase my phone from an Apple dealer and therefore have no warranty. Would I still be able to pay money for them to take a look at it?

Thanks for the help.

It doesn't really matter where you bought it. I would NOT send in the phone to Apple though if you have taken it apart, unlocked / jailbroken or otherwise messed with the hardware or software in some fashion.

You can go to Apple's Site and check your repair eligibility.

It does sound like you might have a hardware issue though.

Well, I'm from Canada and they never released the iPhone gsm here so it is jail broken. Maybe I will just take it into a 3rd party repair store. I am still hoping it's a software issue though

I know this is an old thread but OMG I have the EXACT same problem! Camera crashes after a few seconds, doesn't matter what app I use - whenever camera is activated it crashes. Also the "wont wake up from sleep" issue started to happen to me about the same time as the camera thingy. However there is a way to "fix" the sleep thing through changing som plist file names using SSH. However the battery time sucks with this fix.

I am beginning to believe this is a hardware problem to. Thing is that the software needs to be fully updated before I can turn it in to my operator who sold it to me for repair, and since yellowsn0w does not work with the latest upgrade I have to wait...

Could you please tell me what you did? Found a fix? Thx!

Hi All. I am having the same problem as noted here. After up grading to 3.1.2. My current work around is to set auto lock to never and disable camera in restrictions so as not to accidentally reboot if I hit the camera app.

When I launch camera shutter opens than within a second white screen, then reboot.

Has anyone solved this problem? I have extended warranted but accidentally washed my phone, full cycle than dried it too, so even though my phone has worked fine for the past year after drying out, they will not repair because of this past incident.

So I'm on my own, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Darren
