What does the check mark/no check mark do in the name column?

When songs are not checked they will not play when listening to music in iTunes. iTunes skips these songs and will only play the checked ones. Also, when sync'ing the iPod/iPhones and you have only sync checked songs box checked they will not move to the iPod/iPhone.
