More Junk In A Box

My Ipod is set to synce automatically from new, I have 122 songs in the library but only 59 on the Ipod.

I followed Apples wooly fixes, which cost me considerable time re-installing and it made no difference. (As I knew it wouldn't)

I thought I would try and sync manually and in the instructions it says

"In Itunes, select Ipod Classic in the device list and click on the Summary tab"

WHERE IS THE DEVICE LIST?

snowdog99

The device list is in the left pane of iTunes when the iPod is connected.

If your iPod is automatically ejecting after autosync, hold down Ctrl + Shift when you plug it in and keep them held till after the iPod appears in iTunes - this will stop it autosyncing and you should then be able to make the change to Manually manage.

I would also check your music files in iTunes to ensure they are properly tagged with the Artist, Album, Song names and a genre so they will properly show on the iPod.

This sounds to me more user error then anything else. Just keep your cool and try all your options. You just paid a considerable ammount of money for your new iPod, dont give up on it just yet.

Becker

There in lies the problem.

The device has only shown once when I moved the first 50 odd songs.

Now all I get in the left pane is as follows:

Library
Store
Genius
Playlists

No mention of the device.

1. The iPod must be connected for device to show in the list.
2. If it is and the iPod is not showing in iTunes have you tried connecting it to a different USB port? Is it showing up in 'my computer'?

ipodjunkie20

when this happens to me I just eject it with safely remove hardware, then i re-connect it and it shows up again.

Just to see if anything would happen I deleted about 30 songs. It came up with the message "Are you sure you want to delete from library as this will remove from any Ipod or Iphone at next connection" I answered yes, deleted the songs, plugged in the Ipod and guess what it didn't delete them.

It did show the device this time but didn't take them from the Ipod.

Am I doing something wrong, I have printed the on-line tutorial and followed step by step.

Getting a bit fed up now, thank god I never sold my vynil!

Cheers for any help that may come along

Becker.

Based on this post http://forums.ilounge.com/showthread.php?t=252394 you have your iPod set to be manually managed. This is why when you deleted the songs from your computer they didn't also delete from your iPod.

Based on your writings it seems to me that you do not want to manually manage your iPod, rather you'd like it to sync to your computer library automatically. Next time you have your iPod connected to your computer de-select the manually manage option.

Becker

Scoobz.

It is definately set to auto.

Seen as I only have a handfull of songs on it I am thinking off un-installing Itunes all togeather and starting afresh.

Well it doesn't get any better. The handful of songs I have on my Ipod I have been playing in the car. But after less than two weeks I am already getting a message to Reset and Resynch.

If the technology is this fragile, the fact that this message board exists and is full of problems bears this out, how can they sell such an item?

If someone had spent £160 on a ECU for thier car and it had to be re-programmed every two weeks they would be going spare. Why do we have to put up with substandard goods just because it is percieved as entertainment.

This is the single worst purchase I have ever made in my life.

It's a shame there isn't a "For Sale" section on this board.

Not another one of these posts... There are a few things you need to know:

  1. This appears to be confusion on the end-user part not really being an issue with the iPod itself.
  2. These forums exist so that we can discuss iPods. There are forums for Ford cars, Sony car CD decks, HP iPAQ PDAs, and even threads dedicated to your precious vinyl. So I guess that must mean that nearly everything out there is terrible as there are online forums dedicated to discussing it.
  3. Complaints are always heard more so than compliments, this is true for anything. There are hardly any people who come here and say "I like my iPod, good job Apple." Why should they do this though? Lastly, most of the problems are very simple and are due to end-user confusion.
  4. iPods, just like any other DAP on the market, will encounter errors and need to be restored. There isn't a single portable audio player on the market that is perfect. They all need to be reset every once in a while.
  5. Making a general, all knowing, pompous statement won't get you any further here or in the rest of the world. I don't understand why you made the assumptions and statements that you did.

People are here to help you but that is hard to do whenever you make such statements. I suggest that you plug the iPod into your computer and restore it using the latest version of iTunes. This will put your iPod back to factory standards and solve any software issues that it might have. You can then choose to sync music to it either automatically or manually. The songs must be in your iTunes library (and your computer must have access to them) in order for auto-sync to work.

Kornchild.

Whilst I don't appreaciate your character assasination of me, I am but a humble person and am willing to learn from you. I will give you my sequence of IPOD events tonight, you tell me where I have gone wrong and I will endeavour not to make the same mistakes again.

1 I have reset the Ipod
2 I have retorsed the Ipod back to factory settings wiping out all music.
(By doing this it automatically resets itself to "Automatic Sync"
3 I have introduced and uploaded three Cd's to Itunes, totalling 73 songs. ( (This was done following the downloaded instructions from Apple)
These go as follows:

"Importing Music From Your Audio CD's Into Itunes"
1. Insert a CD into your computer and open Itunes
2. Click to remove the checkmark next to any song you don't want to import
3. Click the import button.

These songs have then appeared in a list in Itunes.

I have then connected my Ipod, it has given me the message "Synching do not disconnect"

It has then given me the message "Ok to disconnect"

And yes you have called it correct, there are no songs on the Ipod.

Please tell me where I am going wrong as I can't see it.

Thanks in advance.

ScoobZ

With your iPod connected to your computer:

Click on your iPod under Devices

In the Summary tab, in the Options section, which (if any) items are checked?

On the Music tab

Is Sync Music checked?

If yes, which of the following is checked?
- Entire music library
- Selected playlists, artists, and genres

If it is the latter, do you have any Playlists, Artists, or Genres selected in their respective sections?

Becker

Sync Music and Entire Music Library are checked.

I have plugged it in again, it has gone through, do not disconnect, synching, ok to disconnect etc and then I get an error message telling me that drive E can not be found. No music has transferred.

I think even Kornchild will understand why I am getting frustrated, after three weeks of effort i still have nothing to show on the Ipod and my next port of call will be the Apple helpline which will probably be about 60p a minute!!
