Prog. Rock

Does anyone here listen to prog rock? I've got some Yes and Rush and Dream Theater on my iPod.

I'm looking for some more prog rock reccomendations though. Isn't Zappa basically prog rock? And also, if you thought it about it, you might be able to classify Primus as prog and Tool as well.

Yeah I'd think Zappa and Primus are Prog. Not so sure about Tool though. I'm not a fan of theres and thus have no knowldge to bais an opinion on. I just remember them as a Pantaera-esq, Metal Band. But, forgive me that was like 10 Years ago. Perhaps they've evoled some since then.

As for other Prog Rock... I like Queen, Pink Floyd, Staus Que amongst others.

Genesis, Peter Gabriel David Bowie, and Jethro Tull.

From Genesis I'd get The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
From Gabriel I'd get Peter Gabriel 1, 2, 3 all of them are quality
From Bowie go with Low, Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, Hunky Dory
From Jethro go with Aqualung, Thick as a Brick.

Hey Dan, have you heard the song "The Family and the Fishing Net"? I heard the cover by Primus, and that's an effed up song man! I like it though.

Wow the first mention of prog I've seen that isn't connected to me.

First off check out the label inside out. http://www.insideoutmusic.com/ They carry a lot of great prog rock and prog metal.

A quick list:
King Crimson
Spocks Beard
Ayreon (Check out The Human Equation)
The Mars Volta (Punk/Prog blend)
Tool (unusual time signatures make them prog in my mind)
Flower Kings
Kings X
Arena
Liquid Tension Experiment
Quensryche
Transatlantic
Madsword
Paradise Lost
Symphony X
John Petrucci Jordan Rudess (of Dream Theater)

Some of these may only be loosley described as prog, but thats what I love about the genre. The good stuff is unclassifiable.

Plus if you like prog that means that you probably like guitar solos so check out
Steve Via
Joe Satriani
Eric Morse
Stuart Hamm
Steve Morse Band

Please keep this thread going, there just isn't enough love for prog going on here!

I would call Tool more prog-metal if anything (and I really like Tool, especially their last two albums). Yes, I would call Primus prog rock. As for Zappa, take your pick, the guy did so many styles of music (and all of them incredibly well) it's really hard to accurately label him as any one thing (musical genius sounds about right!)

2112 is probably the godliest prog album ever. As a matter of fact, i'm wearing a Rush 2112 shirt right now!

People in the hallway ask me who they are and I just shake my head. I have no hope for this society. All I see are Taking Back Sunday shirts...

I just feel that the stuff that Queen did in the '70's '80's and very early '90's is sort in parallel of sorts to that of Rush. Queen was just as progressive as any of the above Bands I mean Queen I (1973) sounds very different to say Innuendo (1991),. Wouldn't you agree?

Although I think the Flash Gorden Soundtrack might be the best comparison to 2112.If I dare to make such comparisons, If not the certainly to anything that Quenr˙che ever did Operation Mindcrime... So yeah I think that thay were progresive.

I actually get this too, whenever I wear the shirt from their 30th anniversary tour no less... As if it's not bad enough that these people are asking who Rush is, ("Oh is that a band or something?") that it happens while I'm wearing the 30th freakin' anniversary shirt is just insult to injury!
