Question Rookie Question: FLAC to WAV/MP3

Here's a newbie question for everyone. I purchased an album online in FLAC format and would now like to convert it to MP3 format. How can I convert FLAC to WAV to MP3? If I convert FLAC to WAV can I then use my LAME 3.90.3 encoder to do the WAV to MP3? Will any quality be lost going from FLAC to WAV? The sound quality is my top priority so I guess I'd like to use my LAME encoder if possible. Sorry if this has been discussed before. All of these music formats are becoming a blur to me!

No quality loss will occur since FLAC is lossless. If you are converting a lossless codec to a lossy codec (MP3, AAC) then it is just like ripping from the original CD source.

dBpowerAMP Music Converter can do the conversion from FLAC to MP3. You just need to download the FLAC codec for it from dBpowerAMP's Codec Central. However, dBpowerAMP only has a 30-day trial for MP3 encoding since the patent-holders of MP3 got a hold of the author of the program and stated that he must pay royalties in order to continue using MP3 in his program. It is $20 to register the program to use MP3 after 30 days. Personally, I think spending the $20 for MP3 encoding is worth it because this program is really good and easy to use for converting between audio formats.

Foobar2000 is a media player that can also do conversions from various formats to other formats. It's a little more advanced but once you get the hang of it it is really nice. It's a little more effort to configure and use. You'll need a copy of the LAME command-line encoder available here.

Thanks for the response! Do you know if dBPowerAmp can convert FLAC to WAV? I looked but didn't see any definitive answer on this. It looks like a good program though. Sorry for the bone questions.

Be careful converting to WAV if you want to keep your music's tag information. In most cases you'll lose it converting to WAV.

Converting FLAC to WAV/MP3 is not so difficult. Just type how to convert FLAC to WAV on Windows and Mac or how to convert FLAC to MP3 on Windows and Mac in Google to find the solution.

Things have changed quite a bit in the past 7 years or so since this thread was started.

Not only that but doing a simple Google search on this subject will yield 100000000 download links to a bunch of crappy software titles.
