Music like Cake

I am very picky in music and have not been able to find anything I like to listen to for a long time. I recently stumbled across this band I had never heard of called Cake. They are a great band, and I want more music like theirs. What do you think I would enjoy if I like Cake.

My favorite songs of theirs are going the distance, no phone, and never there.

Check out http://www.musicplasma.com/ Enter Cake into the search box and hit enter. You'll find other groups that you may like that are similar.

Cake is a pretty sweet band. Fashion Nugget being their best, personally. I think it's called Fashion Nugget. The thing about Cake is that they are quite unique in their sound. I don't think there are really any bands like them, but 311 or Red Hot Chili Peppers COULD be options. It's hard to put them in a category. However, I always lumped them with Beck for some bizarre reason. So, I choose Beck and Cake, even though they are hardly similar. Go ahead. Try it out.

Also depends what about Cake really attracts them to you. For instance, the following bands may spark you interest for there quirky sense of humor: Barenaked Ladies, They Might Be Giants, King Missile.

I was just going to suggest BNL and TMBG Barenaked Ladies doesn't exactly match them in sound, but then Cake's sound is pretty hard to match. I might also throw Weezer into the pot, even though they too don't exactly sound like Cake. But sometimes I get reminded of Cake when I listen to them.

I think what I like in cake is the interesting guitar parts. And that trumpet is a nice touch. I can't stand a generic cut and paste beat and guitar background with singing. I like some interesting background.

Maybe you'd also like a band like Reel Big Fish. Not really anything like Cake, but it's certainly not generic guitar and they make use of a variety of other instruments sometimes. If you liked that about Cake, you'd probably like that about RBF, too.

I think I finaly understand exactly what it is in music that I like. Its the Instrumental track that does it for me, not the vocals. I like modern music, but with a nice rythem in the the guitar/drums/syth.

Soul Coughing have disbanded, but they have three major albums, and their music has a lot of quirkiness that's similar to Cake's. Also, the vocalist/songwriter, Mike Doughty has done some solso stuff - they're both on iTunes Music Store.

You might want to check out Calexico. Their stuff varies a bit, but they have some instrumentals that sound a lot like Cake. Guelo Canelo (the only two words in the song that are in Spanish, from what I can tell) is really cool.

Geggy Tah had that song 'Whoever You Are' - that reminds me of Cake's sound.

So far everything you have suggested has been too... soft. Im looking for harder music. If that makes any sence.

Thanks for trying Im a hard order to fill.

Edit: Soul coughing is definatly the best so far of all the music mentioned here. Its still a little too soft.

A band I would suggest would be Oasis. And also check out the Spin Doctors.
