This was a thread we had going over at the old forums that I really enjoyed, so I thought it was due for a reprise.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Car Wheels On A Gravel Road" (AMG link) Lucinda Williams Those of you here in the 'lounge who have known me for a while know what a fanatic I am for female vocalists. Despite this fascination, somehow Lucinda Williams had flown under my radar until I heard her newest album ("World Without Tears") a few months ago. I was immediately a huge fan, and I quickly purchased her whole catalog (well almost - her first two albums are being shipped to me from amazon.com as I type this). "Car Wheels On A Gravel Road" is my favorite Lucinda Williams album, and my hands down favorite album right now. I just can't listen to it enough. Well known for her incredible song writing, poignant, distinctive voice, and wonderful blending of folk, country and rock into a genre all her own, I believe this album showcases all these aspects of her artistry to perfection. It also has an incredible "one-two-three" punch of three opening tracks: "Right In Time", "Car Wheels On A Gravel Road" and "2 Kool 2 Be 4-Gotten". I love these three songs, but only slightly more than the rest of the album. Highly recommended, particularly for a flavor of the Southeastern U.S. Tom

Tom,
I am flattered that you deem my thread worthy of resurrection ![]() Hmm, I seem to keep coming back to "Audioslave" by Audioslave at the moment - another album in a genre occupied by the likes of Incubus, Puddle of Mudd, Creed etc - they are a new form of Rage Against The Machine (3 ex RATM members). Maybe it is my midlife crisis that makes me enjoy this "Angst Rock" is it called? But then I also enjoy Amor, Gotan Project, Cinematic Orchestra, Porcupine Tree and Jakatta quite a bit at the moment too (If you can have more than one final song.......... )

I really am liking Neutral Milk Hotel's "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea". It's really quite good, and can be creepy or soothing depending on one's mood.

mmm...
It's all about Tori Amos - Boys for Pele. It's creepy (she hooked up her piano to the metal fence of a graveyard, for chrissakes) and beautiful all at the same time. Download "Caught a Lite Sneeze" or "Horses" - my personal favorites. |

I FINALLY found the a copy of the cd ive been looking for the past 4 ro 5 years, and it is now my current fave... Temple of the Dog by Temple of the Dog
The seminal grunge album, featuring an all-star cast, with Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder sharing vocal duties, and the rest of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden doin EXCELLENT back up. For any rock fan, this is a must for their collection, and for any Soungarden/Chris Cornell/Audioslave fans, well, its a no-brainer. Many people may not be aware that this album came out BEFORE Pearl Jam released Ten, so this is actually Eddie Vedder's first major label recording (since he wasn't in Mother lOve Bone along with the rest of PJ). IT is a work of great emotional and musical significance, and in my book, THE grunge album (with Nevermind a close second). Hunger Strike and Say Hello 2 Heaven alone makes it worth the price of admission. Cornell at his best, Pearl Jam before they, well, weirded out and hit it big...its a piece of musical history and one of the greatest rock albums ever released. |

Fans of female vocals should check out Kathleen Edwards' new album 'Failer'.
The first two tracks ?Six o?clock news? and ?One more song the radio won?t like? have a strong flavour of Neil Young about them and she comes from Canada too, as do most of the best female singers. She gets compared to Lucinda Williams a lot, it seems, but cites Aimee Mann as her big influence. The next track ?Hockey skates? is a quiet gem. She has a good breathy voice which sometimes wavers in a very fetching way, and she seems not to be capable of writing a mediocre song. This is one of those rare albums where you wait in vain for a duff track that doesn?t have memorable bits of musical business or a snatch of lyric that catches in your head. It's on my Albums of 2003 list, because it came out over here this year. If you live in the USofA it should've been on your Best of 2002 lists! |

Getting a lot of mileage out of El-P's 'Fantastic Damage'. Out of Brooklyn, good underground hip-hop featuring many of El-P's label-mates (Definitive Jux).
Only temporary, though, sure the old faves (The Sone Roses, The Jam, The Verve) will outlive this puppy. |

Well I kind of have a tie for my current favorite. All that i've been doing lately is switching between these two:
Finch - What It Is To Burn Deftones - Deftones Although I know next Tuesday these will be put on the backburner because Our Lady Peace is releasing their live album!!!
