I didn't know what to call this music for the longest time - the merging of acoustic with electronic, but I'm really enjoying it. A month or so ago I heard the term "folktronic", and well I guess that's as good a sub-genre as anything. Its been my big category for this round of eMusic downloads. My favorites are:
N. Lannon - this is really hard to find, but he had an awesome album Chemical Friends in 2004. Blusom - I dug The Metapolitan from the day it was released last year. This is what really got me into the sub-genre. I'm not sure why they never received the attention they deserved. I still listen to this a fair amount. Juana Molina - Most of what she sings is in Portuguese (I think), but the sound is great. Son is a fantastic album. Tunng - I had some of their music before, but I just downloaded the preview version of their 2005 This is...Tunng: Mothers Daughter and other Tales from allofmp3 and its one of those albums where the total is greater than the sum of its parts. I'm getting the rest from eMusic soon. Their latest album Comments Of The Inner Chorus has some wonderful songs that are great on their own. Thee More Shallows - This is a bit of a ringer; these guys are a lot different than the others. Its music that evokes that disoriented feeling when you wake up in the middle of a dream (in fact, some of their songs are about that very subject). My favorite album is their debut, "A History Of Sport Fishing" (which is currently only available in the UK), but More Deep Cuts is also very good. Their latest EP isn't too bad, but not up to par with the previous albums. Anyone else getting into this? Last edited by bdb; 10-19-2006 at 10:31 PM. |

I think I got Blusom off a recommendation from you here and I like them. Will look into the rest.

Peter, Bjorn and John - I think this band has been mentioned on these boards before. They are a Swedish outfit who have a wonderful selection of voices and an acousitc heritage. Not sure whether they fuse the electro and acousitc styles together, but there are plenty of remixes (at least on iTunes). The single Young Folks is a worthy addition to any music collection. They have an album out too (Writer's Block) which I have yet to sample.

On emusic try the new Califone album - that is an interesting mix of acoustic and electronic.

The Embassy are another good Swedish group. Reminds me of New Order synths mixed with Happy Mondays rhythm. Here are some of their mp3s from my blog: Peter Bjorn & John The Embassy |
