Using a id3 tagger...what version?

At the moment I have been using ID3TagIT using the settings for ID3V2.3

will this setting work on my ipod that is on its way?

also, it seems that the tags are not showing up after saving...winamp reads them as if the tags were never made

thanks for the help in advance

The iPod actually doesn't read tags, the program that you use to upload tunes reads the tags and populates the iPod's database.

With that said, as a rule you should delete id3v1 tags and use id3v2 tag (2.3 is fine).

Not sure why winamp isn't reading them, never used it. If you're going to use MMJB, MC9, Xplay, Ephpod, they all can read id3v2 tags no problem.
