You don't need to have iTunes on the same computer for PodPlus to work- I've used it successfully on my Windows Me laptop (I use iTunes on a different computer to get the music onto the iPod). When they say you need iTunes, all they mean is that you need to have used the iPod with iTunes, at some point in the past. And as I say, because it's not writing anything on your iPod, it should be completely safe.

One other option (that's free) is iDump:

If your Win 98SE machine has at least 64M RAM, then you could try Java uploaders. I have no 5G iPod, so I can't confirm that it's working though. However there is nothing to lose.

Ooh.. I really like that. Its small (140KB), looks nice, and is fast. This has earned a permanant spot on my iPods HD Perfect for when over at a friends house. (To unload only that public domain movies and music, of course.)

IDump killed my movies: the movie menus now take me to the audio and video files mixes in together, and the video doesn't play.

I just downloaded iDump, copied both the executable and installer on the iPod and was able to run the executable from the iPod. It worked fine.. and then I ejected the iPod and I can see the movies fine.

isanity: are you sure you are playing the videos from the Videos menu and not from Music?

I'll do some more tests...

Ben

Yeah.. it didn't effect the movies on mine either. As far as I know, it doesn't modify the itunesdb file.. so I can't see as how it'd mess anything up.

This program looks promising. It says you choose to import by artist name/album etc.

Does it in fact allow you to import the original format of album/artist/song title as it is on the ipod without having to re-type everything from scratch?

I have almost 40 gigs of music in Apple Lossless, and I'm hoping this program will allow me to do the transfer without having to type in 1026 song names, and will convert in that format.

fast - free - safe - Pod to PC transfer

the original post is at the end of the software compendium sticky thread, but here is another link....

h^^p://workspaces.gotdotnet.com/nPod

it's beta, but it is absolutely safe, does not write to your ipod.

it reads your pods database so all of your playlists are there and copy to pc uses the info from the database to name your files.

please give it a try and give some feedback so that the big daddy version will be the best it can be.....

I just used iDump to get back some of my music collection that my sister 'accidently' deleted off my PC.

It worked a treat, and you can restore the file names in a number of formats (I used artist/album/tracknumber-song).

The only problem I have now is that iTunes won't recognise that my iPod is connected....does anyone know why this is?

You could always load Rockbox on your player. It would allow you to drag and drop from your iPod without using any other software....

I have used iDump successfully b4, however, i've been getting regular (80% of the time) crashes while Copying Songs to the HD... The main window will disappear & just leave the transfer window which also freezes. Only way to kill this is the Task Manager.

Anyone else having this problem?

When it works properly though, it's a dream to use. Esp. w/ editable file/folder names.

Only other complaint is that it loads by default the entire iPod library first. With 55+Gigs of data, it takes almost 8 mins!!

Could it be that w/ video on the pod, iDump gets confused & crashes?
