I wanted to get my 1st Apple laptop but I see there's Macbook Air and Pro to choose from
.Which is the better value? I definitely want the i5 or i7 processor 13in. (I hear they are discontinuing the 17in Macbook pro not that that matters) I appreciate your opinions Thanks Peterabb

If you have enough budget, i suggest buying MacBook Pro. It is much more powerful for various applications.

The RMBP has fully replaced the 17" MBP. I can't say that I blame Apple for killing off its least selling MBP and replacing it with something else in the same price category. The RMBP is really a nice machine and has a higher resolution than anything else in Apple's arsenal now (including their iMacs and Thunderbolt Display). If I had the money, I would purchase the RMBP. Otherwise the MBA is really hard to beat. It provides all around faster performance than the 13" MBP (stock configurations), the ULV processor in the MBA is no slouch and many people just dismiss it due to the low clock speeds, it has the same resolution as the baseline 15" MBP, it is much lighter (there is a huge difference between 2.96 pounds and 4.5 pounds), and is more technologically advanced.
If anything, the MBA offers more room for expansion simply because of its higher resolution. It doesn't (currently) have any user replaceable parts but that will soon change once OWC figures out how to release an SSD upgrade for the MBA. The only advantages a 13" MBP offers over a 13" MBA is that the RAM and HDD can be user replaced in the MBP and it comes with an optical drive. Other than that, the stock configuration of a 13" MBA is going to perform day-to-day tasks much faster, it is a lot lighter, it has the same battery life, it uses a much higher resolution display, and it is priced competitively. For what you get, both 13" MBP models are drastically overpriced. The standard $1000 version has the same hardware as most $500 notebooks and the $1500 version is about $800 too high. The baseline 13" MBA is actually priced around the same range as other ultrabooks featuring similar hardware. It doesn't really carry that "Apple tax" that the 13" MBP has.
