Wow that was really enlightening Clark.

I don't think there's an official time (even though office workers might consider the magic 5pm to be it).

Till she cry 'Lover, gold-hatted, high-bouncing lover,
I must have you!'

Is this like the proverbial "If a tree falls in the woods, and nobody's around" kinda question?

I'm going with 6pm by clocks, and sundown for the naturalists...........

I'd say around 5ish but I just say good evening when the sun goes down. Anywhere from 4 pm in the winter to 9:30ish in the ummer

Afternoon definitely after lunch until the sun starts to set. Once it's getting dark, it's evening. That's how I work it anyway.

I couldn't say good evening to someone at 5pm when it's still light. I would say good afternoon, then 'now go away I'm going to cook dinner'.

Evening

eve·ning

1. The period of decreasing daylight between afternoon and night.
2. The period between sunset or the evening meal and bedtime: a quiet evening at home.
3. A later period or time: in the evening of one's life.
4. Chiefly Southern U.S. The time from noon to twilight.

evening

n 1: the latter part of the day (the period of decreasing daylight from late afternoon until nightfall); "he enjoyed the evening light across the lake" [syn: eve, eventide] 2: a later concluding time period; "it was the evening of the Roman Empire" 3: the early part of night (from dinner until bedtime) spent in a special way; "an evening at the opera"

i think evening starts as soon as you've had your first martini, gin & tonic, scotch on the rocks, etc.....!

though not all of them together........!!

Evening begins when I've made the last call of the day, switched playlist to "Ride Home Music" and started to decompress.

The martini is a good indicator too, but I prefer bourbon, straight up, on my patio with my dog and a smokin' grill.
