a program that makes a video ipod very realistic

i was watching attack of the show on G4 last night and they showed this program called "rat dvd" it compresses an entire dvd, menus and everything, down to 2.4gigs. if that doesnt make you think, "man, thats perfect for use with a video ipod.", you really arent thinking then are ya? just thought you'd like to know.

I don't understand what everyones obssession is with this idea for a Video iPod. I think it's a horrible idea. iPod=MUSIC. The only video that should be on the iPod is music videos, and even that is kind of silly.

But I suppose, that is the best compression rate I've ever heard of.

I don't understand the anti-video feelings. If they come out with an iPod that plays video, you don't have to buy it. I'm sure there will always be one that continues to play music the same as today's iPods. Some people just think it would be good to be able to do other things as well since Apple did such a good job with music, why not expland to other things?

Personally, I'm looking at getting a job where I would have to commute an hour+ on a train everyday. It would be nice to be able to record a TV show, transfer it to an iPod and watch on the trip. Why shouldn't Apple make a product that can do this?

I'm not aganist Apple making a portable video player, I'm aganist Apple using the iPod name for recognizability if or when they do make a video player. They should expand their line, call it something different, take a chance like they did on the iPod. There's no denying that if they came out with a portable video player under the iPod name it's soley for name recognition.

The video thing is cool but what would the price be? A cool slogan for it would be the iMovie one "If a pictures worth a thousand words, whats a movie worth?" Even if they made it a video player it would be worth while to make it touch screen like a pda but with a special pen since u could get the screen dirty with ur fingers

I am not looking forward to vPOD. I was hoping the price of iPOD photo to drop when 5G comes out.

Um 2.4 GB is much too big for a video ipod to have a practical use. If you've got 10GB of music and a 40GB ipod that leaves room for ten films or so. Plus that size is for a TV resolution, for something the size of the PSP's screen (approximatly what an ipod video screen would be) an entire DVD can be compressed to under a gig easily.

But If Apple bring out a video ipod I probably won't get it, I'll get this new thing you can plug your ipod into and play video from the ipod.

Ok, I know I have been saying everything against the idea of a Video iPod. This doesn’t mean that I don’t like the idea but I just don’t see it being practical at this time, maybe in two years. I’m saying this because a video iPod will need to do the same thing (at least to me) to movies/videos that DAPs did for music. By this I mean be able to carry my entire Music CD collection at near the same quality with me. A video iPod will have to do this will DVDs and TV shows. An iPod video will cost $600+ just by looking at other players. Another thing is everything is going to High Definition. Demand for it will also be low. Look how the iPod is used and designed. It’s made to not to be seen. People use it a working, driving, working out, etc. iPod video would have to be looked at. I think the best solution is an add-on like that new Nyko Movie Player. This lets people like russgiro88, who want watch stuff on trains. Ripping DVD’s would be the easy part buyt you would need a whole new set of software to make it easy to use and computer Hardware to capture TV shows. Tivo might be able to add this feature. But is you want to manage it from you PC then it’s a whole new ballgame. You’d probably have to have XP Media Center PC. This then gets into the whole copyrights issues.

its like the photo iPod u get ut but do not HAVE to put pics on it. IF the keep teh same design for a video iPod u can get it and not us ethe video part. IF they change the design they will keep a ''normal'' iPod as well

I agree that the iPod is not ready to become a movie library on its own for the reasons that you've said. Maybe an add-on is the best way to go, but I want it to come from Apple. I don't trust Nyko to make it easy enough to use. From what I've seen, the Nyko device looks like a brick. I'm not sure I would want to carry that around all the time.

The idea of it is great, but I'd rather see something from Apple that I know will work and will be an elegant solution. They could make something that is thinner and lighter than what Nyko has come up with. I want something that I can manage in iTunes or another Apple software product, that's going to have an easy interface to use.

I agree that there are issues to work out, but I'm just stating what I want to see, it's up to Apple to deliver that.

I think Apple would make a great solution but it would most likely be limited to Macs, because of Hardware issues (Video Capture) to make it work on Windows. They could invent a device that hooks up by USB or Firewire, maybe to capture the video. Third parties would be more incline to do Windows versions than Mac. Nyko device is not great. I think they used the old portable DVD design. I don’t see how they can make it much smaller than it is with out risking damage happing to the iPod during use. I do think it should be widescreen at least though. I also thing Apple will want to work out Podcasting first before movie to big video files.
