Play Count Won't Update in iTunes

I have iTunes here, without about 6000 songs...

Am recently noticing that the playcounts of songs are not updating. Like I'll KNOW I've listened to a song and it will say 0 play count..

This is happening a lot.. I really need to be able to fix it. If anyone knows how to fix the problem I'd appreciate it if they'd let me know.

First you have to be set to automatic update.

Second if you play a song on the iPod, but then change tags in iTunes (Artist, album, etc, but rating is free of this one), the iTunes data overwrites iPod data and any play count or rating changes don't get transfered to iTunes.

Cheers,
Stu

I am a new owner of a 4G iPod and still playing with the options the software provides.

I use iTunes 4.6.

Do iTunes & iPod synchorinize the playlist counts or are they maintained separately. In other words, if I play a song in iTunes, does that count get added to the count in iPod at the next sync.

jk2004: As long as your iPod is set on Auto Sync, and the date and time are set correctly on both your computer and on the iPod, playing a song on the iPod will update the playcount on the same song in your iTunes Library upon your next sync. The opposite is true as well.

Thanks Andy.

I did some tests and confirmed that it works. The confusion arose when I wanted to have some smart playlists which should pick least played tracks in the iPod.

When you have such playlist, if you access and play the same playlist twice, you should get a different list of tracks in the second run right?
I had set the "Live Updating". But I felt that the playlist in the iPod does not get updated if I do not re-sync with iTunes.

I repeated some tests and confirmed that after I play a single track from the smart playlist that it dissapears from the playlist the next time when I access the same playlist.

My next attempt will be to confirm, if "Random" is selected instead of "Least Played", whether the playlist changes on subsequent accesses, in the iPod.

I want to have a smart playlist which changes tracks everyday to be used with the alarm clock.
