it seems to me, with Itunes off, you could just copy the music from the external drive to your laptop. then start iTunes, delete the songs (this just deletes the old location reference) and use the "add folder" function to add the songs located on the laptop.

Yeah, you could do that.

However, if you care about such things as playlists, date added, play count, last played date, etc., you won't do that.



If you don't have a regular, good backup routine for your music and media you will eventually lose it all.
Hint: Using your iPod as your backup strategy is not a good plan.
