Red face iTunes on PC iPhone music library & sync

Tech: iPhoneX, Win 10 PC, iTunes 12.8.150 from the Microsoft store.

I mostly use flac because it's lossless and widely supported, even by Microsoft, but not by iTunes.

My solution is to keep 2 music libraries, the main one, mostly flac, some wmp and mp3. And a second, iTunes only, library which is a subset of the main library but all mp3 conversions.

Which used to work even though it's a hassle!

With iTunes 12.8.whatever, iTunes is indexing my main music library (sans the flac files) even though:

Edit > Preferences > Advanced > "iTunes Media folder location" is set to a single file location - my iTunes media folder.

What's my best solution here: edit a config file, use different software to sync music?

btw, I tried posting this on Apple forums but got an error: "You are not allowed to create or update this content"

Thanks,

Ideally, iTunes would read all formats, I could then use a single media library and iTunes would allow me to create a sync playlist from this single library for my iPhone & iPad.

On Windows iTunes is a bit of a mess with config in %UserProfile% and an iTunes subfolder of the default Windows Music library location and the Media location in iTunes preferences seems to be ignored.

Also, everytime you uncheck the "warn if iTunes is not the default player" option, the next time you view preferences it has rechecked itself.

Found a good solution.

1) For any Windows users DO NOT download iTunes from the Windows Store! You're better off downloading an earlier version from Apple with the auto updates enabled then updating directly from Apple.

2) I downloaded <newbie recommended program> there's a free version but I paid for the ultimate edition as it's such a great program. It performs file conversion. You can easily copy all photos to your PC. And a ton more features including backup, etc.

I generally tell people to avoid apps on the Windows Store as they are severely limited. Apparently iTunes is there and not totally usable just like most apps on the Windows Store. For iTunes use https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ to get the full software that handles all the file formats, conversions, etc.

The above post had the software name removed because new people tend to be spamming their own stuff.

As for the Apple Forums, we are not affiliated with them. We just try to be easier to use.

Using 2 libraries is more difficult to manage than 1, the lack of format support can be very frustrating. iTunes does not support FLAC, but does support a similar format called ALAC. Several software programs can handle this conversion. Once in ALAC, then the tracks are usable.

Have you backed up your iTunes Library this week? If not, you are risking losing your music and playlists....
