Tones no longer shows up as a media type in iTunes?

Running an iMac and iTunes (both up to date)

When I restored my new iPhone 8 with my iPhone back up, everything restored just fine. Just fine except for my custom ringtones and text tones. None of them restored.

When I checked my iTunes on my mac, tones were no longer a recognized media type.

All of my custom tones are still on my hard drive and still in the tones folder which is in the iTunes Media folder.

I cannot add the tones to iTunes because it is no longer a media type.

Any recommendations

I discussed this a bit in my iTunes 12.7 post.

It depends on the source of the tones what you need to do.
If you purchased them from Apple, they say you can redownload them on the iOS device: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207955

If you made your own (like I did):
Apple recommends that you use Manual Management, and drag the files from finder and drop onto your iPhone (the iPhone still recognizes tones and will put them in the right place).

I find that manual management causes other issues as discussed in the other post.
So I think the following would be better:
- changing them to Music
- put a ringtone indicator in the track name (add _RT: to the beginning)
- setting the Skip on Shuffle option
- put them into a ringtones playlist
- sync the playlist
- set the ringtones to these songs

It's not a great option, but what I'll probably use.

Have you backed up your iTunes Library this week? If not, you are risking losing your music and playlists....

Thank you.

The ringtones were my personal creations. I sometimes hate changes in iTunes.
