Lost ability to delete files from iTunes

Hello!

I recently moved my music library to my NAS successfully, iTunes reads and updates the files when required. What I have lost is the ability to delete files from iTunes like I used to be able to do. How I understand iTunes to work is if the music library is not a part of the media folder then you can delete from iTunes but not harddrive, the current setup. The reason I'm starting a new thread here is that I can only find fixes that "consolidates" the library or allows iTunes to rename files. I don't want this to happen - I only want to be able to get the delete option back, everything else is working fine, and I hate the way iTunes renames folders/files into what I find is a mess. I have moved the .itl file around - part of Music Library folder, higher up in file explorer, is this the file that needs to be in the right place. Where IS the right place?

Currently the file structure is as follows:

\\DISKSTATION\music\iTunes Library Files\Music Library

I have placed the .itl inside the Music Library folder which contains multiple genre folders. This doesn't do what I want. I have placed the .itl inside the iTunes Library Files folder (one up) still not doing the deleting.

I have changed location of iTunes Media folder to the same:

\\DISKSTATION\music\iTunes Library Files\Music Library

I have got myself all confused and not entirely sure what I've changed to stop this working. When I first moved my library it WAS doing the deletion thing. Why I played around with it is that my iPod Classic would not sync which is fixed now and the only thing left is to get the deletion to work.

*** after checking the iTunes media location for this post, I noticed iTunes had changed the iTunes Media folder inside my Music Library folder (I needed to convert a .wav file). I have referred the setting back to the above ...\Music Library and it is now chugging away doing something - "Updating iTunes library". AaaaH!

So to summarise - what should be where in order to enable delete from library?

Cheers
