Alternatives to iTunes for the iPad?

I find myself using my iPad less and less for music with each new "downgrade" of the iTunes music library. I want to listen to my library, not Apple's service.

Has anyone found a suitable alternative to iTunes for the iPad? I've been doing a lot of research but it appears that some of the better options - MusicBee and Floola -- are no longer available in the app store. From what I've read, they're not compatible with the latest iOS versions.

All I want is a good interface for the iPad -- I would be willing to live with iTunes to sync with my Windows PC if necessary. I just want a player that was as good as the one we had 2 years ago

It seems that you are mixing things together.

iTunes is used to sync and manage apps and music. This seems have been getting worse each release. Alternatives are MusicBee, Floola, CopyTrans, and MediaMonkey, there may be others.

You can use iTunes as a player for your stuff, just disable Genius (File->Library->Turn Off Genius), Apple Music (Edit->Preferences, Restrictions, check Apple Music, click OK) and everything is your music. It is a decent interface for syncing to the iPad, as it shows you everything you need to get what you want on it. Yes the interface is getting worse, but it is the best out there.

On the iPad, in the Music app, be sure to always go to the Downloaded Music section before picking a playlist. That ensures you are only listening to what you synced.

If there is something in particular that you can't get working, ask and I'll see if I can figure out how to get it to work.
I'll even log bugs against Apple if something is broken (3 open now, 2 fixed, the rest closed as duplicates).

Have you backed up your iTunes Library this week? If not, you are risking losing your music and playlists....

options in iTunes Music app

Thanks for answering. I'm not as concerned about managing music as I am about the iTunes Music player.

I have my options set as you describe -- but when iTunes Music is displaying only Downloaded Music you have limited display options.

Before, for example, if I want to find a particular song by the Rolling Stones, I have to look at each of the 9 albums I have for this band. Before, I could see list of all of the songs at once.

This new interface requires use of the drop-down menu all the time. It was so much easier to just explore your collection.

I find their terrible search box frustrating as well.

I tend to use my iTunes so that it looks like prior versions so I use Song View (Click on Songs under your library, or if in a playlist click on View->View As Songs).

In the search box when you enter an artist, there are several options, Songs, Artists, Composers, and Albums. Click on the Songs header and you'll see the list of all the songs by that artist. Only in Title order, but at least it is there, all the songs at once.

I miss having multiple windows Playlist X in Window 2 and Playlist Y in Window 1 for comparisons and organizing. Having the search change the main window with the results was much more useful than this box we have on the side.
