The thing is I have that beach ball all the time...
My set-up is a 2011 iMac 3.1GHz running 10.7.2 Lion. The library is on the Drobo, connected via Firewire, the library files are on the HD. I'd like it to be zippy and even bought the new iMac to ensure that...haven't go there.... I saw an administrator here said they had terabytes on a Drobo - would love to get his tips......... |

When do you see the beach ball, when trying to access the Drobo through Finder?
Is this a new Mac to the Drobo or was it working fine on another computer? Have you tried the usual Mac voodoo such as Repair Disk Permissions on the boot drive from Disk Utilities? Is Spotlight indexing the drive (dot in the middle of the magnifying glass icon in the Menu bar)? This can cause a Mac to act a little wonky while it is indexing and it can take some time to index a large library. I turned off indexing for my Drobo since it only stores video, my music still stays on my boot drive. Most Drobo models may also enter a power saving mode which spins down the drives. The idle time can be adjusted on some models through the Drobo Dashboard. The drives you used may also have an impact. I use Western Digital Green drives which also incorporate technologies to save power as well as keeping them cool and quiet. This also increases access time which is not a problem for my setup. Even then I only see the ocasional beach ball when accessing video through iTunes. It also is probably why video loads are a little delayed on my Apple TVs but it's not a major issue for me.
