Hi,
This is probably in the archives, but hopefully it's a simple answer. Currently using a laptop (with XP) and an External hard drive with "D" as the drive letter and everything goes into D:\Music\xxx. I want to move everything to the new desktop (with Vista) and continue to use my current External Drive. The new desktop has the primary drive as C: and the secondary drive designated as D: so this will conflict with the EHD I have since all the tags are D:\Music\xxx. I have heard that it is not good to rename the secondary drive associated with the computer. I'm not sure if I can just rename the current EHD with a new letter and then do the transfer or even what order to do this in. I have not even downloaded iTunes to the new desktop. Please if someone could list the steps in order and how to proceed. I have 8,000 songs on the EHD and don't want to screw this up. I do have all these songs from my library on a 160g iPod Classic. Thanks to all, babeba |

Sure - you can do dat.
![]() Name your external disk with whatever letter you want - your music library will stay intact, since it doesn't care where it lives. iTunes does, however, so you'll need to tell it where to find your stuff. Edit>Preferences>Advanced tab - click on Change, and enter the new location (for example, E:\iTunes Music). Good to go! Edit - just thought of something else - have you plugged your external HD into your new computer yet? It's possible (make that likely) that it will automatically assign a new drive letter to it as part of the recognition process (You know--Windows has found new Hardware, yada yada). If so, you're ahead of the game. Last edited by Funky Discharge; 04-11-2010 at 12:43 PM. Reason: Additional info |
