I notice that sometimes itunes sorts by last name and sometimes by first name - sometimes neil young is an "N" and sometimes he's under "Y". Is there anyway to fix this?

Select a problem song, right-click, select Get Info from the pop-up menu. Select the Sorting tab in the Get Info window & see how the Sort Artist is set. You can compare this to songs that sort the "other" way & see how you'd like to change it.
