Question Playlist Help

Hi,

I'm creating playlists composed of tracks from a very large playlist with a limited size of 650MB (MP3 CD). Each playlist must contain unique songs extracted from the large playlist (A).

I'm going to call the very large playlist, playlist A.

Each sub playlist has the following ...

Playlist A1 = playlist is A
Playlist A2 = playlist is A and playlist is not A1
Playlist A3 = playlist is A and playlist is not A1 and playlist is not A2
......

These are working as expected and contain unique tracks.

Each sub playlist has live updating turned off.

So my question is should each playlist have live updating turned on or should only the last playlist in the series A(n) have live updating turned on to update when I add more tracks to playlist A?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

What exactly are you doing?

According to the above you're making three essentially identical lists, yes, you're keeping their particular tracks unique, but unless there is filtering going on that you're not describing, I'm not seeing the point.

The best thing is to have your Playlist A1 with the rule added {Last Played IS NOT in the last X days} where X is any value you deem reasonable. Then songs rotate out as they are played and new ones are pulled in.

Where you seem to be confused is what live updating does and does not do: live updating only affects the contents of the playlist when the applicability of the rules change for some track in the list, e.g. the list can only have 4 star songs and you change one song's rating to 3 stars, poof, it drops. If the applicability of the rules does not change, the contents remain static now and forever more unless you manually clear the list's contents and let it refill. So with or without enabling live updating, the above would give you 3 static playlists that would never change because their rules would always remain true.

Actually, the three lists are not identical. They all contain unique tracks from playlist A limited to 650MBs each. Playlist A is filtered for Genre = Rock and 5 stars. All I wanted to do was divide playlist A into separate unique playlists that fit on an MP3 CD. I only want the last playlist to be updated with new tracks that get added to playlist A, so my guess would be to leave live updating enabled only for only the last playlist until it reaches the 650MB limit.

Thanks.

OK, got you, but just to re-iterate: whether you leave live updating on or not isn't going to affect the contents of the first two lists, they'll fill and unless something else changes their contents, they're going to remain exactly the same.

Not that this applies to you, but one of the primary misconceptions people have: they make some list, check off live updating, say select according to random, and then scratch their heads why it never changes.
