I assumed that if you read my whole post you'd understand my meaning. (At this point, I'm not sure if you're trying to understand, or trying to do something else.)

But I'll paraphrase:
Further, it appears that the REASON it fixes (2), (3) and (4) is BECAUSE it turns OFF live updating.

I'm kind of coming to the same sort of thinking Peter expressed in that you're either being deliberately obstinate or Peter just isn't being clear even though I followed just fine.

So let me try:

When you deliberately include the "Playlist IS Music" rule, this has always broken live updating on all existing iPods, so that smartlist will not make any attempt to update itself on the iPod.

This prevents the buggy live updating code in the iPhone OS software from executing and, therefore, the list at least remains in the proper order even if it does not change as people would prefer.

Now that the live updating is broken on the iPod but the smartlist still has live updating enabled via the checkbox, the smartlist's contents will be correctly updated when you sync by the not buggy code in iTunes.

Capice?

Yes I understand that.
But is it not the case that live updating already didn't work ... And thus by turning live updating off (with the playlist is music rule), you are turning off something that wasn't working right to begin with (live updating) ???

No, live updating has always been working, just not necessarily properly in every case.

The key glitch is that any referencing of another playlist since iPhone OS 3.0 breaks it, and that blew up a lot of people's playlist systems.

The new snafu - what this entire thread is about - is that when live updating is working, it's messing up the play order from the way the user sets the list to be ordered, hence Peter's fix: a rule that has NEVER worked on any iPod (you could probably achieve the same thing with a Media Kind IS/IS NOT... rule).

Live updating works on the iPod except for cases that explicitly break it (c.f. Playlist IS Music), the problem is that it's working incorrectly. That seems to be your confusion.

Okay I thought that live updating not working was one of the problems. I guess it is, but only in some circumstances. I got it know

.
Ah, this explains why some of my playlists have stayed in proper order (because they are referencing other playlists in a rule).
I guess I could use adding a rule to reference another playlist instead of adding playlist is music to fix it.

Thanks for your help!

You guys fixed my problem. My "recently added" playlist was not working properly on my iphone, but was working on my ipod and I couldn't figure out why. Adding the rule "playlist is music" did the trick. Thanks so much.

I'm surprised that they haven't fixed this by now.
I recently updated to 3.1.2, and while my playlists that are like "The Beatles - Most Played" are fine because I fixed them last time by changing "Artist is The Beatles" to "Playlist is The Beatles", some playlists that were just "[name of artist]" that contained all of their music are now messed up, and I have to add the "Playlist is Music" in order to fix it.

Yea, although I'm surprised that they haven't implemented a fix for this by now. I mean we shouldn't have to add the "playlist is music" rule in order for it to function properly.

Angry

I am having a similar problem with Smart Playlist not synching properly with my iPhone. My iPod handles any Smart Playlist. But the iPhone is not synching the same way. In fact the Smart Playlist is showing in Smart Playlist with the iPhone connected. Once I disconnect the iPhone, The Smart Playlist does not appear on the iPhone. I have shut down the iPhone completely and restarted the iPhone and to no avail.
It seems to me that everyone on this thread is skirting around the problem because no one knows. It would seem simple to admit to that instead of adding all these irrelevant components into the mix.
Maybe, that's a problem Apple should address.

Which of the following explains your comment:
1) You didn't read the thread
2) You didn't believe those who've claimed that what you call "irrelevant components" has solved their syncing problems
3) You didn't understand the thread.

At least 4 people had their problems solved in that fashion, including myself.

Just checking

BTW, it doesn't look like you've tried the solution that has worked for so many of us. I suggest you give it a try.

Pete
