Organising Music in Libary

Hi,

I new to the whole Apple and iTunes thing after picking up my first iPod yesterday. I've had other mp3 players in the past, but i've never had to contend with iTunes before!

I imported my mp3's into iTunes and a lot of my older ones are showing up as seperate tracks in an individual album. So each track has an album of itself. I tried highlighting them all and getting file info and setting all the information seperatly (like Artist, Album name etc) then pressed ok, thinking they'd all jump into 1 album, but they all stayed seperate.

I'm guessing this has to do with ID tags on them, as i think they might have ID3v1 tags.

Whats the easiest and quickest way of getting the older albums that are fragmented like this into a single album? Is this something i can solve in iTunes or will i need to remove them from iTunes, re-ID tag the problematic files, then bring them back in?

Thanks for any help!

"Get info" on the individual tracks and look at the "Sorting" tab. I've found that differences on the "Sort......." fields there can cause songs to appear as multiple albums.

I believe you can fix this by selecting the offending tracks (That you want grouped together), getting info, and then selecting "part of a compilation" This should group all the tracks in one album.

Also, are you positive the tags are all the same?

Also, if all tags are the same, setting it to a compilation and then unsetting the compilation flag is one way to force iTunes re-read the tag data and can fix these occasional glitches.

Try converting the tags to ID3v2. iTunes can do it for you.

To do this. Select the tracks you wish to convert and then go to the advanced menu in iTunes. If available select "convert ID3 tags"

Don't accidently select the "Convert to AAC or MP3" menu by accident

Apologies for not updating sooner, i bought my touch to go on holiday with so fixed the problem with your advice and then jetted off!

It turns out that some tracks had sorting filled in whereas some tracks didn't, which was why they split all the time. Removing all the sorting information and re-adding it fixed the problem.

Thanks for the help!
