If you registered your iPod with Apple then I cannot see why they would not provide you with the serial number in the event of theft!

iPod: How to find the serial number - check this article and see if any of these options apply.

There are several places where you'll find your iPod serial number:
In iTunes 7.6 or later
In iTunes 7.3-7.5
On the back of your iPod
In the iPod About screen
On your iPod packaging
On your iPod invoice or receipt
In iTunes 6
From the iPod manuals download page

If you ever had the iPod serviced/replaced by Apple then check into your account via: apple.com>support>check my repair status>then login to your account. The iPods will be listed along with the serial number right under it.

Yes; the iTunes app stores the serial number of every iPod that it connects to. (So if you've had more than one iPod on your computer, you'll have to sort out which is which.) Look here:
\Documents and Settings\<userName>\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPodDevices

Open the file in a text editor, look for the entry below "serial number".

Pretty cool info. Thanks.

I had my iPod stolen and needed the serial number

In Snow Leopard(MacOS 10.6), the serial numbers of iPods that have been synced with your computer are stored in your /Library/Preferences/ folder in a file called com.apple.iPod.plist. You'll have to open it with a text editor and scan through the other information in there, but you'll see one or more sections that say:
<key>Serial Number</key>
<string>xxxxxxxxxxx</string>
The values in between the <string> tags are your serial numbers.

My Win7 comp took a dump three days ago so I can't check for 100% certain, but it ought to be in C:\Users\Your Name\Application Data\Apple\blah blah.

What OS? Win 7 and/or Apple's programmers writing for Win 7 have scattered some of the data throughout the various App Data choices compared to Win XP.

So under Win 7 I have the file "iPodDevices.xml" under C:\Users\Me\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\

Open it in a text editor and everything is as you'd expect.

I had no idea that the serial number is on the back of the iPod. That's pretty cool, and I had no idea it's on the iPod packaging as well. I keep all my packaging (although I couldn't tell you why) so if my iPod ever disappears I have the serial number right here.

Well the file location has changed since the XP path you quoted was written.

In Vista and Win7 it is in \Users\<login>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\iTunes directory.
The file is called iPodDevices.xml (unless you have file extensions hidden still, then it is just iPodDevices)

The file should open in your default browser.
