This morning I decided to create a 2nd iTunes library on my sign on, so that I could load my lossless back up in to it and do a bit of admin work on it (update disc numbers, track numbers etc.) but it seems to have had a nasty knock on effect to my original lossy library.
To create the new library I used the method of holding down the shift key whilst opening iTunes, and choosing the option of creating a new library. I set the appropriate folder for the location of my files (which are stored on a seperate hard drive to my main library) and happily carried out some work on my lossless library. However..... This afternoon I opened up my original lossy library (again by holding down the shift key, then selecting the appropriate iTunes xml file) and everything looked OK at first. I am noticing now that if I delete items from my library, I am no longer receiving the "Keep Files"/"Move To Recycle Bin" option that I always used to get. So my first (and most important) question is, how do I restore that message, as I use both options regularly? Also, I notice now that if I use the "Add Folder" option to add items to the library, it is no longer copying the files to the iTunes music folder (I know the setting exists to alter this in Preferences-Advanced-General), however I want this setting ticked by default in my lossly library, but unticked in my lossless library, but iTunes seems to want me to have the same setting for both libraries, does anyone know a way around this? I'm hoping there are no other issues that I haven't come across, but these are the 2 most pressing at the moment, any help would be most appreciated! Thanks Andrew |

I've sorted the missing "Keep Files...etc" message, I re-ticked the box to copy files to the iTunes music folder when adding to the library and its regenerated the message.
The main question now is how to have this option ticked by default for one library, and unticked by default for the other library? Thanks Andrew |

Your problem is likely all centered around the "add to iTunes music folder" option. You don't get the option to delete from hard drive if a file is not in the iTunes folder.
It is a downfall of the new extra library features that you can't personalize preferences for each library.... No work around that I know of. I think that there are a few third party apps that can create more than one library out there, but I'm not sure how they function (or if it's windows/vs mac compatible).

Thanks for the reply. The other solution that I would be OK with (if it works) is for me to create a new user on the computer, purely for sorting the lossless back up, and create a new iTunes library for that user. Hopefully it will let me personalise the settings for that library without affecting my current lossy library on my sign on.
I'll give it a go and see what happens... |
