Question iPod playing songs out of order

I'm having a strange problem with my iPod, but after much research, it seems to be an issue with the latest version of iTunes. (I have a 4G iPod, but it seems to affect people with anything from a 2G through present models, shuffles included.)

I recently bought all of the songs of an album off of iTunes except for the one I already had. I updated the tags so the "Disc 1 of 1", "Track x of y", "Artist", "Album" and "Album Artist" fields are all the same. In iTunes, the tracks are displayed in the correct order. However, on my iPod the track I already owned, an mp3 as opposed to protected AAC, is at the bottom of the list.

Does anyone know how to fix this or do I just have to wait for Apple to recognize the bug and fix it with the next iTunes update?

Did you mass-edit the tags so you're absolutely certain that they all match, or did you just look at them and go "Oh yes, that is spelled the same way."? It's entirely possible that one spelling of the album or artist name has extraneous spaces at the end or in the middle. If you haven't yet, I suggest you highlight all tracks on the album ([SHIFT]+click a continuous group of tracks or [CTRL]+click a dis-continuous group), then right-click any one of them and select "Get Info". Now edit the "Disc 1 of 1" and "Track <#> of X" tags (be sure to leave the track # alone and only edit the "of" part).

If that doesn't work or if you've already done that, then are you viewing the album on the iPod in the album browser, or in a playlist? A playlist will always display on the iPod in the same order as it was sorted when you last synced the iPod. In the album browser, though, I think it should always display in track-number order.

I tried selecting all the tracks and editing them, but to no avail. What I wonder is why are they showing in the correct order in iTunes, but not on my iPod?

I typically listen to albums through the artist browser, but I double-checked and it's showing out of order in the album browser as well. Weird.

I looked at some of my partially-bought albums and noticed a commonality: They all show in the correct order in iTunes, but on my iPod, they're all ordered with the Protected AAC files first, then the other files (mostly mp3 or non-protected AAC) second.

That's pretty odd. Apple's got a "report a bug" link somewhere. I'll see if I can't dig it up.

[Edit]: Found it! I guess it's technically a "feedback" link rather than solely a bug report link, although reporting a bug is one of the many types of feedback you can leave. You can go to http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipod.html and submit a bug report.

I have an album with some songs from iTunes and others being mp3 and have no problem with the play order (60GB video, Win XP). Dumb question, but is your iPod set for auto sync or manual? If manual, any changes you made in iTunes won't be reflected on your iPod unless you delete and replace, but I'm sure you knew that .

I've got a similar problems. An album from the iStore had some problems during the download and I got the tracks out of order. They appear in the wrong order in the iPod, and in iTunes, they are in wrong order in the Album view, sorted by album. However, in the Album view, sorted by Albums by Artist, or Albums by Year, the order is correct!

They have been mass-edited and checked, and the track numbers, name, et al, are correct.

It doesn't have any effect on the sort problems.

Sometimes this fixes sometimes it doesn't.

If it looks right in iTunes, check to see what you are sorting by. Album by artist and Album by year will sort it "correctly" often, but if you sort by album it won't sort right in iTunes, it sorts wrong on the iPod no matter what you do.

Sometimes making sure the tags match works, including album artist, sometimes there is absolutely nothing you can do about it and I don't know why.

My problem is Meatloaf's "Bat out of hell album". I bought 6 of seven songs from one version of the album, and 1 of them off of another version of the exact same album on iTunes, even though it's tagged the same from mass tagging, it refuses to sort correctly.

Pain in the ###...

Stu - yes, I re-entered that field. I also tried wiping it too. I pretty much tried all the fields to ensure that all the info was identical. It seems that there's a case or set of circumstances by which the Track # is ignored, imho.

That's what I've come up with...

You'd think that sorting by album would default to the track number sorting... Perhaps something about being able to group albums together to then be able to sort these groups into track order messes up.... It's crazy how sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I had another CD of one iTunes song and the rest from CD, it just took fixing disk tags and album artist tags and it sorts correctly...

It's a crap shot. Isn't it great that correct tags either work or don't?
