I've recently gotten some emails from people asking how to change the play order of tracks in the iPod (by AppleScript, if possible). The basic notion is that after copying tracks to an iPod playlist, iPod re-orders the tracks alphanumerically..."so, can I prefix each track with its track number so iPod will maintain the order?"
Why bother? While iPod is mounted in iTunes, go to an iPod playlist—not its main library—sort by play order and arrange the tracks the way you want them. (In playlists, the furthest left column is the play order column—you won't see it in library playlists, aka the "main" library.) Now, Control-click any track in the playlist and click on "Copy To Play Order" in the pop-up. When iPod is unmounted, the tracks will be in the order you arranged them. (This is not AppleScriptable, by the way.)
