LAME encoder

I've read many references to the LAME encoder option in several threads on this forum. I don't see it anywhere in the advanced importing options in itunes. AAC, AIFF, Apple Lossless, MP3, and WAV are the options I have. Am I looking in the wrong spot? Or, is it not the type of item that is listed? Don't know which encoder, bitrate, etc I'll end up using but want to make sure I'm fully informed and know all of my options.

Thanks for any info.

iTunes uses a circa 1999-era encoder; definitely not LAME.

If you use a Mac there is an AppleScript called Import With LAME... that will add a simple interface that will allow you to use the LAME encoder with iTunes.

I'm not sure if there's a plugin available on the Windows side. Allot of people like the stand alone program EAC, my preference on Windows is CDex. I stick to the --alt-preset standard setting that will give you roughly a 160-192kbs variable bitrate. It's an excellent compromise between file size with great sound quality.

If you are using --alt-preset standard then I dont think you are using the latest LAME encoder, whih uses -v settings.

There is a tutorial on using EAC in my sig as well as links to the latest LAME encoder.

Ya, --alt-preset standard is good enough for me. Upgrading the codec in Import With LAME script on my iBook is more work than I wish to do right now.
