iTune Library Disappears!

Completely.

I had left my PC running whilst attending jobs around the house, I return an hour later and reboot my machine [pc was sat at desktop, iTunes was closed].

When I launch up iTunes after my reboot, the library has completely gone! Empty, back to square one. However, my music files are all still in :

C:\Documents and Settings\***\My Documents\My Music\iTunes

Is this a simple case of attaching a library to iTunes or?

I really have no idea.

No trace at all of "iTunes Library.itl" or "iTunes Music Library.xml"?

Thats exactly what happened to me too. I made a thread about it but it didnt get any responses.

What I had to do was go to the iTunes folder and go to a folder called "Previous Libraries". There you will find a "copy" of your iTunes library from a previous date and if you choose to open that, it will give you back your music, but everything will be out of date. As in, some of the recent albums you added wont be on there. But at least you will get back your playlists and some of your playcounts.

To make iTunes open this previous library, you have to open iTunes and press the "Shift" key on your PC (keep it pressed) and then a message will appear that lets you choose a library. Youll find the previous library file with a date. You open that and you got a previoius version of your library back.

Another option is just to re-add all the music to iTunes, but that would mean you lost your ratings, playcounts, and playlists.

Yep! I tried re-opening my previos library but it did nothing? Despite it being well over 13kb in size [my current was 1 ].

So I decided to take a shrrtcut and re-add the folder that contained all of my music! Saved the library. Hmm. This has only ever happened with my on iTunes 7. Bah humbug.

The only way to get iTunes to open the previous library is to do what I posted above. But since you already added all your music back, I guess youre good to go.

You didnt really save the library tho because you did end up losing your playcounts and ratings, not to mention any playlists you had.

We are lucky that iTunes is just a database for the music and it doesnt hold the song files themselves, or we would be out of music right now.

Yus you're right.

I'm not fussed on Ratings, Play Count etc as everything I listen to is submitted to LastFM anyway.
