Problems ripping

Hi Guys...I recently converted to itunes, and have had much success until recently.

Previously, I was using MMJB, and I never had problems with it until I had about 10GB or so of music in my library. Everytime I would try to rip a CD, my computer would reboot by itself. I got rid of MMJB and started using CDex to rip, and just vPod to sync.

Now w/ itunes, I wasn't having any problems until last night. Normally when I rip a CD to AAC/192, the speed on average is about 5x. Which I don't mind too much. Then I tried ripping one CD, and literally the average ripping time, was about .5-.8x. I couldn't take the slow speed so I just stopped it, and tried a different CD. This time, I had the normal ripping speed until I got to the last track. This track would rip at the snail speed of about .8x. Once it got to about half way through the track, my computer just rebooted all by itself! This is only happening with certain CD's as others I tried after ripped fine.

Has anyone experienced anything like this before? I did a search but came up with nothing. Any help would be appreciated!

It looks like, you got one of those darn copy protected CDs. You should find a small symbol or a message stating that this CD will not play on a PC on the Jewel Case. If this is the case, you need a CD drive which can handle the copy protection (e.g. Lite-On drives are known to bypass most of the audio copy protection).

Hope that helps

I thought it may have been that, but I didn't have any problems ripping the same CD using CDex. Also, one of the CD's I had problems with, was fine for all the tracks except the last one. Then, it got super slow, and my PC just rebooted...

Any other suggestions???

Hm, not really. I ripped till up to now more than 800 CDs without any problem (except of course the copy protected ones, which took a whole lot longer than the normal ones). I used iTunes for Windows 4.1.1 and a Lite-On Drive LTR-52246S.
You can also try to use a software called Easy CD-DA Extractor (www.poikosoft.com). Try to rip with this software the tracks which are not working with iTunes. Rip them to wav. files. If this should work, you can import them into iTunes and convert them to AAC if you want.
The only other possibility, I can thing about are, that your CDs have a problem (scratches,...)

Hope that helps

Can I retain more quality by ripping to WAV and then converting to AAC as opposed to ripping to MP3 and the converting to AAC?

For sure it's a better quality to rip first to WAV and then convert the WAV to AAC. Ripping to WAV is a one to one copy of the original CD track. So you have only one compression (from WAV to AAC). Compared to ripping the track to MP3 and then converting them to AAC, where you have two compressions (Track -> MP3 -> AAC).

By the way, how is it going with your bad tracks ?

Thanks, I'll probably have to go the long way around and do that. 1 CD I let rip, and it eventually finished, it took a helluva long time to rip though. The other tracks I was having problems with I just converted my old mp3's into AAC.

With that Easy CD-DA Extractor do you notice if it puts any sort of gaps between tracks? I like that alot about itunes, is that it minimizes any noise/gaps between songs.

You can configure Easy CD-DA Extractor, to do it or not.
