Automatically Updating Your iPod

Ive read the iTunes help file, looked thru the tutorials on this website, and cant find an answer for this seemingly very simple question:

I have all my mp3s on a secondary harddrive. I want iTunes to automatically add all of them when i plug in my iPod.

I dont want them copied to the iTunes music folder (its 60+GB).

Ive done the following without any luck:
Edit>Preferences>iPod tab>Music Tab
Checked "Automatically update all songs and playlists"
Deselected "Only update checked songs"

And in the advanced tab, ive chosen the iTunes music folder location as the folder where all my mp3s are.

When i click ok, and then update the iPod, nothing gets added.

Any help?

im not sure this would work but give it a try.

go to where your default itunes folder is (in your primary hdd)
copy that folder (it should be empty)
then paste that folder into your secondary hdd
plop all of your mp3s into that folder
see if itunes will read from that.

This software will backup your ipod to your comp and even rebuild playlists.

culture, have you actually imported the music into iTunes, or have you just selected it's location as the place to store music?

At risk of stating the obvious and insulting your intelligence -

Make sure "Copy files to iTunes Music Folder when adding to Library" is unchecked in the Importing preferences. Then just use File> Add Folder to library to add the music on the second hard drive to iTunes.

If u click Library in iTunes and the songs are NOT there, then u have to MANUALLY add them to the library first. iTune has a facility to auto scan your HD for MP3, but (don't ask me why) it only does it once right after u installed iTunes. Afterwards, it's a manual process (this part is).

When u Add MP3s to the library, iTunes6 DOES NOT copy your MP3s, it merely builds an index (database). iTunes4.9 as I recall gives u the option to copy, but I'm guessing they have wised up, 'cuz there is no reason to keep 2 copies of your MP3s, so don't worry about your storage.
